Can anyone give me advice with regard to which gardening zones we are in here on the lake. It seems to me that it is warmer in the winter and just a smidge cooler in the summer close to the lake. Does it make enough difference to matter with regard to gardening?

Read the thread below On "Pine Straw...." and I think it will answer your question on temps.

I don't think the lake itself makes enough difference from surrounding areas to matter. Water has a moderating effect, but the lake is small in the big scheme of things. The last freeze is usually early to mid march. Also, the soil around the lake varies greatly and should be considered. You can find anything from solid rock to sand and clay and a considerable range in PH.

I second that opinion about the soil. I hauled in farm dirt from where I grew up and my plants never even realize they are in Coosa County.

Be prepared to amend the soil in your garden site a LOT. On my lot, it goes from sand down 2 feet to solid clay and rocks within 75 feet upslope.
Good luck.
