Just thought all might want to know. If you are going to register your boat this year, the H2O patrol now requires an engine serial number to register or renew your stickers. Only one of my boats had it in the prior registration. It was previously not required and you will not know if you have it until you go to renew. So, Go and look at your motor and write down the number just in case. You will have to make a second trip if you dont have it. They wont give you the sticker unless you have it. All boats are different regarding the location of the number. My big blocks Mercs were on the air cleaner. Easy but some are on a plate or stamped on the engine block. This goes for outboards as well. Hope this saves some folks some time.

I just got a kick out of my friend. Went to the courthouse today to renew and got sent home for serial numbers. While he was gone his wife got on the forum and red my post. She showed it to him and laughed her guts out when she showed it to him. Pay it forward and tell everyone you know so they are prepared.

It's been this way in Jefferson and Shelby County. They also do not like you to get your tags in the counties around the lake if your primary residence (6 months or longer) is somewhere else. They are tracking their tax dollars.

I'm slightly confused. What terrible crime is being prevented by requiring the engine SNs?

My gal in the courthouse said it had to due with identifying theft. Alabama is Alabama when it comes to paying tags though I think. If you live out of state maybe it is a different story though.

My guess by requiring engine s/n is to eventually monitor and or determine if the boat is capable of exceeding 60mph based on engine hp and boat length. That being the case, a non-renewal could be in store if your boat exceeds the limits for Lake Martin.

Honestly Broke Point, they can not keep you from renewing your tags based on where they think you "may" put your boat. The tags are not specific to a certain lake.

Engine Serial Number has always been on the form since I could remember. I don't think the field is large enough for twins though?

Just depended on whether or not the person taking the information asked for it. My guess is that since this state doesn't title boats it may be one way of identifying theft. Buy a hull from the Gulf that sunk during a hurricane, steal another boat that has similar engine and outdrive and rebuild the sunken boat and register as yours... No way to track it otherwise. I am curious though, how many times do Marine Police check engine numbers against the registration? I am not saying it is feasible, in fact probably not practical. I guess if they wanted to they could create a law requiring inspection of the numbers, just like they inspect sewage systems ;-)

that brings up a good point. It is a way for identification. Read an article just last week which was talking about the economy and how boat insurance claims have tripled in the last two years. Many of these claims have been found out to be false. So now people who want to just ditch their boats are going through extreme measures of sandpapering any identifiers (such as boat name) and filing any serial numbers off.

There was one story in the article of a guy who sunk his boat on purpose. Almost got away with it to, until the state decided to raise it do to environmental concerns and found the perfectly drilled hole in his hull.

The kill switch geniuses thought up this one.

I saw that same article. He is most likely going to be made into an "example" and end up doing time. What got me was that it said a majority of these boats are lein free and folks just weren't being offered enough, so they decide to just scuttle it and file the claim.

I feel pretty certain that if the situation persists that O will push a bail out for boat owners becuase the 'boat business' is to big to fail.
