Looks like it's gonna be a great weekend here at the lake. The boats are already hitting the water. Come out and see us at LMOB. Remember, we don't only have great seafood but an outstanding 14oz. Hereford ribeye, porkchops with peach chutney, and grilled chicken....The New Orleans Po-Boy sandwiches are selling like, well, HOTCAKES!!!!!Welcome to Lake Martin....Oyster

Please read the rules for the forum. The forum is not for advertising but advertising is available all over the site. I know you are excited about the comments and interest so far but please stay between the lines. And great luck on your restaurant!

Jenk, I tend to agree with ric. If you'll look at the number of advertisers on the home page, and think about each of them posting multiple times, to include lists of services available, the forum would become essentially unusable and worthless.

I have no problem with an occasional plug to let folks know what is out there -- I've seen Cat occasionally mention what he can do for folks, especially if it has to do with "home delivery" winterizing and summerizing trips to the lake - and just recently there was someone has been posting that they do upholstery -- appropos in light of the recent hail storms and as much a public service as an advertisement.

In my opinion (which isn't worth very much according to my wife) I'd love to see a post saying "hey, we just opened a new oyster bar in the ( ) area. Come check out our menu at www.xxx.com. We will be open x to y beginning xx month". In such a case responses to questions by other posters would be fine - but posting an entire menu or complete list of services should be left to their advertisement and/or web site.

Looking forward to a gloroius Saturday at the lake, rain or shine!

I agree that Oyster made an obvious and blatant plug, but let it be noted that he/she? is a supporter of the forum and has an advertising spot on the site (I can forgive the mistake). Welcome Oyster, and thanks for the support to our habit. To keep everyone happy, try to share a few recipe's if you want to sneak in a plug....or better yet, host a forum night now and again. You could offer a discount, a few extra oysters, or even a drink special for the group (booze always seems to work with this crowd). Either way, I wish you good luck in the business.

Good going Edge, best advertisement is word of mouth. Oyster thank you for the info, I for one appreciate your post and your presence @ Lake Martin. I will not be at the lake this weekend but I will visit your establishment next weekend, and post. As far as Cat, I've seen and experienced nothing much more than FREE advice from a very good and caring person. Good luck Oyster.

I had to re-read your post. Couldn't believe your suggestion that the owners of the oyster bar should post their menu on www.xxx.com? That is just too funny.

I've never been to an oyster bar, nor eaten oysters. Will give it a try one of these days. You are two buildings up from my office, and I see lots of traffic. lol. The car wash has become a de facto parking lot several nights. Must be doing something right.

We came last night (4/17) with friends. Didn't have to wait for a seat. Beer was cold, Margarita was great. Oysters were good, but pricey for the size. Husband expected that they would be larger than 'nickel sized' for the price. Crab cake appetizers were wonderful, shrimp baskets and catfish baskets were great also. We think our order for main course got lost as we waited 45 minutes for it. All in all, food was good and we will come again. It is nice to have alternatives in our area. Thanks!

Hi, long time lurker. First time poster. Food is a subject I have some knowledge about.

Has anyone noticed the lack of professionalism with the staff? I think if all of the staff would at least wear a white shirt, we could tell who was a waitress and who was just another Lake Martin area Bass Pro fan. I think that a uniform of some kind lends itself to better service. When I wear my uniform I always think I am in the spotlight.

The bartender was making a personal call when patrons were waving their hands to get another drink. There could be be three more staff positions at least; A host or hostess to seat patrons, a take out order person, and a second bartender. Lake Martin patrons do, as mentioned above, like to have their drinks flowing. I know that most business is in dire straights but take out food may just be "A bridge too far". When Niffers has someone run in for 30 take outs to eat in his RV, it bogs them down a lot. When the outdoor seating at LMOB get finished, parking will be more dense and both the kitchen and staff will be strung out further. The issue that killed MooWalla was their success. They had the best frozen custard, by far and priced reasonably. They then started to stack the malts up. The last few I got were runny and not cold. If they made them one at a time as ordered, they would still be in business.

My first beer last Monday cost $1.57 now it is going up from $2.75 to $3.00+ tax. I can understand if the pricey entrees like oysters are on the small side but the catfish basket should be on the generous side. It retails for $1.99 pound in town. The food channel has a fun show... Man vs. Food where Adam tries to eat some of the biggest portions around. Every place around the Country he goes to that has been in business for 75 years is still around because the words "generous portions" is the buzzword.

Best of luck to the new restaurant. Please do not let your initial success be the death of you with slow service, crowded conditions and meager portions. Enough for my first post.

You are correct. Parking was an issue when we left last night (3 vehicles waiting to take our spot), and when the outdoor area is completed it will be worse. I also couldn't tell who was wait staff, except our water was a big guy and we could see him all around. One friend with us noted that there was a man near the door chatting up folks and we figured he was one of the owners or a manager. If we go again, we will go early. And, we will ask about the food before we order. 2 of our group got the catfish baskets, said they were great. However, I did notice there was a small portion of fish. I had 10 shrimp in my basket and, with the crab cake appetizer, there was more than enough food for me.

My new motto is "Arrive early and order often." I am going to consider the catfish basket an appetizer and buy a pound of shrimp too. I heard that they will be offering desserts soon. There were some Key Lime pie pieces but I missed out. It got eaten.

"This is not an advertisement, only communication." Lake Martin Oyster Bar has been in the works for 1 1/2 years..We attempted to buy 2 existing properties that claimed they wanted to sell, but wanted much more than they were worth, Go figure...I initially backed off the current location due to two major concerns, Size and parking...Finally, I decided to go ahead with my partners and establish the restaurant, and grow from there...My opinion was, "we have a 40,000 acre recreational lake, and not a oyster bar on it".. "lets do something about that." I personally have been in the business for many years, I head-hunted my staff from different eating places around the lake over the last year, They are my team and I stand behind them. They have worked hard for me, are dedicated and excited. This is something that is refreshing to see in young people today...Our goal is to serve the best food on Lake Martin..With limited size, I truly believe we are doing that.
Our staff will have T-shirts soon, but remember, we are a casual Lake Oyster Bar...I take all of your comments seriously and to heart..We are quickly working out the kinks....My goal is to be in a building that can seat 225 by the summer of 2010..I love Lake Martin, Alabama, Born and Raised. Have a great lake weekend, THE SEASON IS UPON US......

There seem to be a lot of places to eat on the east side of the lake - several in Dadeveille, Oskar's, Niffer's, Christopher, the Oyster place on 34. Unfortunately they are not accessible by boat (well, I'm told you might be able to get to Christopher if the water isn't too high), and if you happen to have a place on the west side (we are in Parker Creek area) it is either a loooonnnnngggg drive or Sinclairs. We don't drive an hour to get to the lake just to pile back into the car to drive another hour to a restaurant.

The question is this: Have any of these restaurants ever thought of providing a service where they would pick customers up at the nearest dock where they could leave their boat, and then take them back after they dine? I can't think of anything better than a nice cruise past the Rock, followed by a nice meal, then in turn followed by a nice moonlit cruise back to the cabin.

Just a thought. The logistics might be daunting, but as it is we are pretty well limited to Sinclairs and the Dockside/Suzy Q replacement restaurant (is it open now?).

The main problem with dockside service is kitchen capacity. When an RV pulls into Niffers with an order for 50 burger baskets on burger day, it may make some gross income but little on tips for the staff. On 2/$10 that is a $250 bill. But there is no $40 tip which the staff splits.

Meanwhile, the drink and tip paying sit down diners have to wait while all those burgers fry. The only reason drive up service makes money is when it is the off season when Lake Martin is dead.

When the LMOB gets its outdoor seating the kitchen will be at capasity.

If money could be made, there would be a restaurant that would do it.
