Having an alter-alias just to keep the interest level up is an interesting thought. Might explain the lack of justification for the positions.....hard to justify something you don't believe in....
In the "who gives a $#!+ category I caught an earlier flight back from Portland today than originally scheduled. Good thing, because the flight I was scheduled to fly back on couldn't get into Atlanta and is on the ground in Knoxville, TN. Thunderstorms in Atlanta, control tower took two direct lightning strikes, last I heard from my customer (who didn't take the earlier flight) is that they MAY be able to start back to Atlanta in about a half hour, and that the damage in the tower was such that they were only allowing VFR approaches. On top of that they are on a 757 and the Knoxville airport doesn't have a jetway big enough to handle a 757 and they are stuck on the plane. Ugh.

Kind of confusing. Why did you and your customer fly to Portland rather than meet in Atlanta. As a good businessman, you should have checked ahead and switched planes with your customer. We are glad to know you are safe and sound. Kinda of boring without your poignant comments defending the DITTO Right.

Not that I owe any, there is a logical and reasonable explanation. Things aren't always what they seem, now are they?
My customer lives in Charleston. I live in Montgomery. The work site was a new Navy ship that is currently berthed in Portland, Oregon.
We both had reservations to return on the 1145 flight today, but night before last a second floor attic water heater in my house burst, and even I can't force water to defy the law of gravity, nor can I make absorbent materials like drywall and carpet act as if they were raincoats. Thus, in view of the fact that things like this always seem to happen when I am out of town and my wife is left holding the bag, I did the best I could and took the first available flight home after finishing our work.
So now are you going to criticize me for poorly planning the water heater rupture?

Seems you have enough issues with the water heater and septic system at the lake. i feel for you. How old was the water heater? I have one in Flroida that is 11 years old and I have been wondering if I should replace it even though I have no problems with it. Have you considered a tankless one??

Heater was over 20 years old - had checked it semi-regularly because my experience in the past had been that failures aren't catastrophic, but will begin with seepage around the bottom. Wasn't the case here, for sure.
Fortunately (and unfortunately) it is one of two, so we aren't without hot water. The unfortunate part is that I will now be replacing two, since the other is the same age, make, model, etc.
Will certainly consider tankless - since the heater is located in the attic and might be subjected to freezing temps, would it come with some sort of freeze-safe mechanism? I am building an addition to my lake cabin and am considering one for there as well, and since we don't heat the cabin when we aren't there, freezing would be a consideration (the existing tank is 40 gals and has never frozen in 15 years).

I would suggest turning the water off, cut the power to the hot water heater, and draining the house while not in use. Water damage gets expensive real fast.

Thanks for the advice. I do that now - but the tank doesn't empty, just everything else. About 10-12 years ago I had a "physics lesson" with regard to the properties of water in its solid state and when I re-did the pipes I put them all on a grade with a drain valve at the low point. If we are not going to be up there for a while and it is cold weather season we shut off the water, open all the faucets, and open the drain valve.
As to the tank, consider that it is well insulated to begin with and that 40 gallons would have to freeze solid before anything is damaged. - and as I said earlier that hasn't happened in 15 years.
I am told that a lot of the tankless heaters are actually mounted outside the house - which would indicate that surely they must have some sort of freeze-proof protection.

30% tax credit for high efficiency water heater. Should be worth the additional cost to get the higher efficieny one. Google high efficiency water heater. That is a rebate not a tax deduction and applies to your primary residence. There is a rebate maximum. While I realize Conservatives have a problem with government handouts, I assume you will accept it if you qualify.
If not, donate it to your favorite charity and take a tax deduction for the money the govenment gave you!!!!!!!!!!

Did some research and the power requirements for tankless are formidable -- 120 amps at 220 volts for a 6 gpm heater. Doesn't take much on average, but when it does it takes a lot. Have to hard wire an 8 gauge line to it. Wouldn't want to stick your finger in that socket.
Probably will go back with standard heaters in my home -- just my wife and me now and we can throw a blanket around the new heaters to reduce heat loss. May put a smaller tankless in the cabin addition.

There are gas tankless water heaters too if you have access to Nat Gas or LP. I have one in my home and it is great. The only negative I will say is that if a lot of people are drawing hot water at once, or the diswasher and/or clothes washer are running and drawing hot water, flow may be reduced for minute while it catches up.

No gas at the main hose - all electric and we have added "stuff" to the point that we are on the verge of needing higher-amperage service from Alabama Power.
For the cabin addition, though, power shouldn't be a problem, as a couple of summers ago a dead pine wiped out my power service line and ripped the breaker box off the side of the cabin - so I replaced it with a good 200 amp service box - at the time grossly oversized for what little demand we presently have, but with an eye for future growth.
