Does anyone have it and do you like it?

I have both with Charter. Service is marginally acceptable, the HD channels are eratic, Charter says to reset the box weekly. Still doesn't work right. There is a stutter in the HD signal. Internet fails about 2-3 times a week, goes away every time we have thunderstorms. And, it's expensive. $150/mo for current level of service. ATT won't support our small area yet, and dish is about the only alternative. I'm gonna investigate dish.

I have both plus phone service and I couldn't be happier. Albeit I'm not not at the lake a 100% of the time. I am however here almost every weekend and here when I'm working the state of Alabama. I never have any problems with Charter and NO GoneFishing I do not get my paycheck from Charter.

Why do I think Maddog is one of those rich republicans who lives off the trust fund his daddy set up for him. Never has to work, has a lake house, a primary residence and can afford cable just for the weekends.

Thanks! Now if we could just figure out our address maybe we can see about getting service. The phone company never liked to have found us when trying to see about their internet service. We don't have a land line there and just want internet to check on things at home when at the lake. We've been given too many addresses for this lake house and none of them are in the computer system for Charter. I think I'm going to have to go to the Charter office in Alex City to see about setting up service.

I have charter internet and cable and it's been fine for us. I haven't found our internet service down all that much. We do sometimes lose service during thunderstorms, but I call and report it and they usually get it up and running in about 2 hours.

I highly recommend that you go to the Alex City office to try to do anything. Do not be put off by the lack of customer service at the window. Hopefully, the manager will just happen to be there and you'll be able to get what you need.

Can you folks tell me approx where on the lake you are located?

We had Cablebusters out to look us over - we are on the north end close to Wind Creek. We face north and have a of trees on our lot. Looks like the only option would be to put a dish in the front yard which may not be permitted by the neighborhood.

Need reliable internet so interested in cable vs phone co.

After 3 years of having my own place at the Lake, and my parents had it for 30 years before that, we have found Charter to be reliable for basic cable. (I do not subscribe to HD, and in fact for budgetary reasons discontinued cable TV last year and haven't resumed yet this year.) That left me with cable Internet access only, which I have to have for professional reasons. If you strip back to Internet access you will find tat your bill doesn't shrink accordingly -- it costs me around $60 a month. An extreme ripoff.

Last week I read about a new Verizon deice that gets Internet via their G3 network and outputs wireless locally for up to 5 users. Service is $60 a month, and you can carry the dingus with you wherever you go, basically giving you wireless anywhere you can get a Verizon G3 signal. I'm thinking it over.

We are looking at Verison too - they want us to sign a two year contract. Hesitant to do that since I haven't even tried the service.

is the real deal. After months of trying to deal direct with Charter, Dish and Direct TV, they came to my house, on time, and solved all my problems. Super folks!

Jim:

Call me the next time you see me at the lake and I will putt over in the pontoon with my laptop and Verizon wireless card and you can take it for a test drive, (the computer, not the pontoon- LOL)

That is the device that seemed like the solution for us part-timers. It is supposedly like having your own wifi.

Thought I would try both!

Did you have to do a contract?

No problem with their service. Issue is my location relative to the satellites.

Yes on 2 yr contract, but was no big deal as I was already a Verizon customer, plus had 30 days to try wireless card and if not satisfied I could return and cancel the service.

Just an FYI, my lake neighbors 2 houses up also test drove my wireless card and ended up with Verizon card as well as we cannot get DSL or Cable connection in our neighborhood so they were on dial up and then my other lake neighbor is on Hughes Satellite and I did a speed test on Hughes vs Verizon wireless and if I remember correctly the Verizon connection was like 10 times faster than the satellite Internet.

You can get a wireless router (about $60, I think) for the Verizon wireless card and be able to connect multiple computers through the single connection. Have not tried such, but probably could have some overall speed degradation from such.

Probably will not help you short term, but it is something to keep your eye on.
AT&T promises 220 channel Digital TV (including HD/DVR), Locals, 3Mb down internet, plus phone, all bundled for about $120/130 a month. I compared my present (ATT phone&1.5DSL) + Dish250 w/o HD and U-Verse is about $20/month less.
Requires high bandwidth fiber into the area where you live, but keep pestering the phone company for service. Who knows??

I'm located in the Sandy Creek area of the lake. We're about four miles from Dadeville off of Young's Ferry Rd and Point Cloxson Rd. Again, I'm completely satisfied with Charter cable, internet and phone with unlimited long distance.

I think we are right around the corner from you. My dh said today that he wants to look into the Verizon thing too. $60 for internet is steep. At least with the Verizon thing like you said I can have it anywhere I go, like sitting in the carpool line next year waiting on my brand new kindergartener.
