OK, you guys got me thinking, so I started to do a little research last night and found there are other options out there besides the big green egg. Not saying the green egg is not the best but a lot of a products success is based on marketing so anyone ever used any of these cheaper alternatives:

Grill Dome -- http://www.grilldome.com/

Primo XL - http://www.primogrill.com/home.html (Oval rather than round)

Dragon Fire Kamado - http://www.dragonfirekamado.com/product.html

From what I have read it looks like the Grill Dome is as good as the egg, but a lot cheaper. As when you buy the egg you have to also purchase a lot of extras such as the stand, etc. Where as these other grills come with such.

So any opinions out there from grillers other then the EGGHEADS - LOL.

Mav, I don't know about these particular brands but, at the Eggtoberfest I have spoken with several people who have tried "knock off" eggs (there are several more out there than what you found) and they said that the ceramic cracked because it was too thin and another said his cracked because it couldn't handle the heat. Niether would replace it and gave them the run around. Some models are shorter than the egg but this is a drawback because you can't get the amount of charcoal in them when you need to cook low and slow (to shallow).

I'm sure that some of them are probably fine. I can tell you the eggs cusotmer service is outstanding and they stand behind their product 100%. I took a small part in (the cast iron grate that holds the charcoal) because it had a very small crack in one side, they didn't even question me, they just handed me a new one free of charge.

The Egg has been around a very long time and is proven to be reliable. The Egg is kind of like iPod. There are many knock offs that claim to be just as good but . . .

I would also recommend going with the Large. I know many people who bought the small or med, and they kicked themselves for a year and finally just sold theirs and got the large. The X-large is ok to but, it's dang big for normal get togethers. If you have a lot of people over a lot, I would recommend the XL.

Mav - if you do decide to go with the egg, I do have a Nest (the stand) that has never been used. I built a full table for mine that the Egg sits in so I never used the nest.

I would sell mine to you cheap if your interested.

Also you can swing by the house sometime this weekend for a beer and a taste of the BBQ that comes off this thing. Let me know if your interested.

I will extend this invite to anyone who wants to swing by. Go under the 49 bridge (small water side) and 3rd house on the right. (Double boat house, wood sea wall, 2 blue hydro ports).

BYOB - LOL

We used to have an egg but upgraded to this one. We have the gas starter attachment and it works great. Cooks some great steaks.

Has anyone tried the Bubba Keg. Its the least gay looking of all of these things and can attach to the back of a vehicle via a hitch receiver. Reviews say it is better than the egg

I have the Primo Grill (Oval XL) at my home in B'ham and the Big Green Egg at the lake.
I am sold on both of these. went with the primo because it is black and my wife thought it looked better in our out door kitchen.
FYI I bought the egg in Alex City (place next to new home depot) last summer. Delivered put together cheaper than I could buy in B'ham and carry down and assemble myself. They are heavy!
I am cooking Pork Shoulders, Ribs and whole chickens this weekend starting tomorrow afternoon.
Slow cook shoulders about 18 hours ribs about 5.
Family has been extremely pleased with results.

We have had a grill dome for several years. The customer service is great and they will replace cracked parts if that should happen. I have had no problems. It is cheaper than the egg. You also need a gadget called a BBQ Guru to go along with the cooker. It is a device that regulates the temperature so you can put a large cut of meat on in the evening, set the temperature you want to cook and set the temperature you want the meat to be when done. You don't have to check it again until morning and the alarm will sound when it is ready. Its not cheap , about $250, but worth every cent if you like to cook low and slow. Use what you save by not buying the egg and put it on the Guru.
