No Minnows in my slough...

Last year minnows were all over the place, nibbling toes hung over the dock/ under the lights, everywhere. No problem trapping them. This year? Zero/zip/Nada. Not there day or night, even with oatmeal and dogfood bait. What's up? Is it seasonal or weather related? Appreciate some advice from you experienced folks, Mack

Mack, we haven't caught any spot tail minnows, either. They may on sandy bottoms near fairly deep water.

when I say no minnows, I mean literally none of any kind, any size. I see/hear fish striking the topwater out in the slough early and late. Maybe that are all in deep water, just seems strange.

I made it a point to look for minnows this afternoon to respond to this thread. I saw some, but not as many as I have seen in past years.

There appears to be just as many minnows if not more in my area than last year. I was taking a look last night over both my Green Monster Light (175 W Mercury Vapor) and my Metal Halide Light (400 W with a yellow glow), and the minnow flow was tremendous. I observed for the first time schools of very tiny minnow of some sort plus a large abundance of the larger spot tails.
Several times this Spring I have thrown out hand-fulls of dry dog food and had large numbers of spot tails feeding on the floating niblets. You may want to install a 3 inch PVC pipe next to your dock with 1/8 inch holes drilled in it below the water line. Affix a screw-off top and fill it with cheap dry dog food. It should increase your minnow population along with attracting catfish. Every once in a while, you will want to pour a quart or so of water down in the pipe.
Does your seawall have rip-rap? If not, this next Winter you may want add it to help as habitat for minnow and small bait fish. It will also help preserve your seawall.
