I have a small paddle boat. I've been told I need a throw cushion and life jackets. Is this right?

While waiting, google " alabama marine police ", click on " boating", scroll down right side to " regulations" and you can find out anything you want to know.

Just don't ask them about idle speed buoys in a major congested area. Being as nice as I could, I explained that I knew that many requests come to them and merely asked if we qualified. I received a resounding "Absolutely Not."
From what I've seen on the lake, I would be one of their biggest supporters (and I guess I still am.)
I'll probably be checked every time I go out now, but there is no way a public servant should act this way.

Based on the conversation I had with the MP when they brought my 15 year old daughter and her friend back to our dock in the canoe without life jackets you need life jackets for sure. $200 fine for each occupant and another fine for the boat owner. They were very nice and professional about it and didn't give a written warning. What saved us was our daughter telling them we require life jackets and they were more afraid of what I would do than what the MP would when I found out they went out without them. He even said he was 15 once and asked us not to be too had on them. He did not mention the throw ring.

The guy I talked with may have just been having a bad day. Or, he may be a total jerk all of the time. I will say, that I've never had a bad encounter with the MP on the lake. 50 years--no fines or warnings. Always treated fairly and with respect.

I think paddle boats should have refelective tape, overspeed protection, black box, portable heart defiliater, back up alarm and a fuel spill clean up kit.

All boats must have life jackets on board for each person. Boats 16' and longer must have a throwable pfd (seat cushion or ring buoy).

So yes, you must have life jackets in a paddle boat, canoe, kayak, etc.
