What if you are sitting in your living room and there is a pontoon boat out on the side of your dock fishing with its docking lights on shining into the water and then reflecting back into your house and then in your eye if you looked out towards the dock / water.
And this person was there for over 2 hours on both Friday and Saturday night.
So what would you do???
Let me tell you what I did.
- On Friday night after putting up with this for over an hour (about 11 O'clock at night), I walked out to my pier, unplugged the fishing lights (did not say one word) and then went back up to the porch and turned on all the flood lights pointing towards the dock and then sat in the rocking chair for like 30 minutes and discussed with my wife and children how rude this individual was and I am sure he could hear me.
Then on Saturday night when we were sitting down for dinner, guess what here he comes again (this time no fishing lights on as did not want a repeat of Friday night) and we had several other families over for dinner and we were all siting on the lake side porch enjoying our meal. So by this time I had enough and asked him if he would to turn off the docking lights as he was not docking and he stated they were not point at our house but the water and then I asked him if he had ever heard of light reflecting off of water and think this ticked him off a bit. But he did back up a little and reposition the lights more down towards the water and then his wife asked me if that was better and my reply was yes, but you still should not have such lights on other then when docking.
So I know I do not own the lake, but to you fisherman out there would you do something like that and if not how would you handle this type situation as I do not mind folks fishing my dock, but for 2 hours per night, lights shining into the house and there are folks all over the outside and inside of the house trying to rest and relax and get ready for bed, etc. So just looking for feedback here, be it positive or negative. Am I overreacting or is this not just down right rude?

Gather about 4 or more of your rowdiest friends and a couple bottles of tequila and limes and procede down to your dock and keep your fishing buddies company! Southern hospitality, redneck style.

I think you handleed it correctly, unfortunately it did not work. Personally I think I would keep a box of firecrackers by the dock and if he did not cooporate, toss a few lit ones in the water around your dock. There would be no reason to stay there and fish anymore.
I understand that he is fishing, but he does not need to "camp out" at someone's dock. If my wife and son were down at the lakehouse by themselves, that would creep them out and make me worried.

I would definitely have a word with the fishermen. It is definitely rude and if they do not understand that they shouldn't be on the water. If everyone practiced a little etiquite it would be nice. Unfortunately, the lake is getting more and more populated and I think things will get worse. Hopefully, we can get the word out that yes there is a right way to fish and not hinder or annoy others. I would say that you had justification, but I would be carful about how far you go. Some people may retaliate in the form of vandalism to your property or steal something arounf your pier. We have fisherman all the time at our dock light and when I don't want them there I just go down there and start fishing myself and they take the hint and leave. If this guy didn't take the hint and leave when you shut the lights out I would say he is and a-hole and would have not taken it any further for fear of what he might be capable of. He could be some toothless redneck who licks to screw with people.

Two things: (1) I stand with Mav 100%. It is just a bit eiry to have the fishermen so close for so long, like they are camped out with you. I know we do not own the water near our house, but decency should be the rule. I have snags in my boat seats from stray hooks, I have seen them on my dock to retrieve hooks, too close is too close. Some people have swim rope areas for their kids protection. Would something like that work? How far out can you put them? Or should you have swim rope areas at all? (2) I think we have a new word/phrase for the LMapedia

Folks, Lake Martin is almost 100 years old and almost all the natural cover is gone. Since most fish relate to structure they will congregate around what's left - and that's piers and docks. By placing lights on your dock you are attracting all the fish in the area. You can't blame boat fisherman for fishing the lights - that's where the fish are. It's also their legal right to do so. If you don't want them there FOR ANY REASON, turn the lights off when you are back at the cabin. As someone who has fished LM for 50+ years (I once had a lot on Blue Creek) I'll also remind the dock owners that you will catch exponentially more fish if your pier light stays on every night instead of just turning it on during the weekends. I still fish the lights, but not on weekends. If I find a pier light on during the week , I know it's been calling the fish for supper everynight.

Crappie is 100% right on all points. We have a light and I accept the fact that there will be fisherman. If you don't want them there than turn off the light. I am on both side of the fence. I fish other people's light and they fish mine.

I fully agree that the lake is like a public road, all access to all vessels. I also agree that a fish hook is no friend of a boat seat, but then a rock from a truck is no friend of a car windshield either. What is your thought of the swim rope? Have you ever caught your hook in the homeowner's boat, or dock, or rope?

Agree with what you have stated, but we may been steering away from Mav's point. It was not that he disliked fishemen or their use of the Lake. It seems this specific individual was abusing his rights, doing something illegal and violating the rights of the homeowner by having his docking lights on for hours during his fishing activities.
Here is one solution. I have a swith inside my house to turn off the power to my boat house/dock. With this arrangement, Mav could of awaited for the perfect fisherman's cast to the submersible light, and then Mav could of hit the switch. Mav then proceeds down his dock to the fisherman and states you just broke my light, and it cost $100.00 + to fix. Now where is my money. I suspect the fisherman would of fled the scene and never of been seen again.
I suspect Mav gets and inordinate number of fishermen since he is near Wind Creek Park and there is going to be a bad apple with this large population. I am sure the vast majority of fisherman are respectful and good folks on the Lake as a whole.

I am lock and loaded with about $100 of fireworks.
I have a good friend who is an avid fisherman on Martin and has been all his life, he made basically the same suggestion which was go down to the dock and explain to the folks you are going to be shooting off fireworks and if they would like to stay and watch that would be fine, but we would not be responsible for any fireworks which might damage their boat / property.
So as Cat would say BLING IT ON as MAV is locked and loaded with some great fireworks.
Anyway guys, thanks for the suggestions and feedback much appreciated as I needed to hear such from the fisherman on this forum to ensure the fishermen felt the way I did in terms of being down right rude and inconsiderate.
