Our neighbor burned trees

all day yesterday. We were not able to even enjoy our own place at the lake yesterday because he had people over there cutting down the trees and burning them. He owns a little piece of land in front of our place because of how we are in the cove. He burned the trees on that little piece of land right at the water. Our lake side deck, porch, tables, chairs and house are covered in the ashes from the trees and other stuff that they were burning. To top it off, when we parked on the street side of the cabin, the ashes were falling over there too so we had ashes in our hair, we stunk as well because of the smell. The smell was even creeping into the cabin this morning even with the doors shut and windows closed. Our daughter had a little friend come spend the night last night and we couldn't swim at our own place because of the smoke. We ended up going and beaching somewhere for the girls to swim. That was very rude of the neighbor in my opinion. He lives there year round.

chill pal.. you are in rural alabama, and we burn stuff we are clearing... Unless the fire department says not.. Might get a package of hot dogs, couple of sticks and a 6 pack and met your neighbor.. might make a friend.. but what do I know??

I think if I knew my burn ashes were covering my neighbors property, cars etc, then I would find a different day to burn on. Weekend when the neighbor is trying to enjoy his lakehome is plain RUDE. Doesnt matter where you are from...

Perhaps he was not aware of the problem he was causing you. Sometimes people get so focused on what they are doing, they don't stop to think how it affects other people around them. Maybe you should have had a word with him and made him aware of the problem.
But, I'm sorry your weekend was so uncomfortable.

Sounds like your back wood hick neoghbor needs his butt kicked for being so impolite. I am from rural Alabama too so to say that has anything to do with is just plain stupid. He picked the timing of his burn and it could have been done during the week if he had any sense of decency.
I would suggest that you let him know how his beahior affeted you and others and see if it makes a difference. If not, well we are in rural Alabama afterall...get creative...

If you are on the lake you are probably in a subdivision not rural Alabama. Most problems I see come from folks that live in subdivisions and want to act like they are in the middle of 100 acres. That's not ignorance. That's an "attitude".
In every subdivision, no mattter where you live, there are people like these that aren't rude - they just don't care about anything but what they want. Peer pressure from the neighborhood and a friendly conversation usually clears it up. If that doens't work maybe a visit to the commissioner or mayor might at least get their attention.

and I do know my neighbor. As I stated in my original post, he lives there year round, he could have picked another day besides Sat when we were there for the weekend. I have ashes on my van that I just washed on Tuesday, now I get to wash it again. I was just stating that it was very rude of him to do this, he has 75+ additional feet of water frontage, a vacant lot on the other side of his property that he could have done the burning instead of in my front door and in front of my 5 year old daughters bedroom.

He could have done his clearing and burning in the winter. We burn stuff all the time in the winter when our closest neighbor is never around. We do try to avoid burning stuff when the wind might carry the smoke towards some of our full timer neighbors, even the ones we don't care too much for.

What you might think about doing next time is to call 911 and tell them you have spotted a fire that is endangering property. The fire is obligated to at least come out and if they deem it a hazard they will put it out.

Unfortunately, Coosa County still does not have 911.
We donated our old cabin to the local fire department for a training excercise. It still smelled a month later. We owe our neigbors big time. In fact, one of our neighbors is about to do the same with their cabin. Paybacks are H3ll.
At least in this situation it was for a good cause.

Would this have been next to where I got the boiled peanuts from. If so he was burning Pine and heart pine at that. It will make a mess for sure and leave a sticky gum where it falls. I would have done it during the week or at night. The wind was up and the water was rough Sat. Not a good day to burn Neighbors thoughts or not.

Yesterday, I was outside and I smelled smoke, but never saw the source. The smoke travels very far, and I'm sure we've all been guilty. I go year-round, and we burn stuff when we can, or when we have the help to haul stuff to burn (which is usually on the weekend...sorry). And the rain isn't really helping...my trees have grown tremendously in the past year from all the rain. Lots of branches to clear and burn...We've all done it...One person's vacation is another's work...

I had the same issue with my idiot neighbor in Bham. I asked him politley to stop the burning because the smoke was getting in the house. He put the fire out but he acked like a crying two year old about it. It turns out he was not following some burn guidelines about minimum distances from structures and he has not burned since. I would check the burning codes in your area. Even though it is a rural area there still may be codes. Most of the time there is a minimum distance you have to be from a permanant structure. If he is following all the guidlines then he can do what he wants.

You are lucky... I used to be a Vol. Fireman... The EPA doesn't like people burning houses... even if it is a fire dept... We got out af a huge fine after we burned one here for training. We had to prove that all toxic materaials had been removed... shingles, carpet, vinyl, siding. They let us slide with the paint and stain, they did however say that they could have forced the issue. This was federal, not the state. Al of that, for a crappy little two bedroom 1940's shack.... Next time... bulldozer!!!

I suspect you are right. This place was pretty much stripped by the time the fire department used it as a training exercise. there was nothing within the old structure which would of been too toxic other than maybe painted wood and shingles.
Of course, this happened over three years ago.
It did offer us a significant tax advantage (Charitable contribution), and it saved on haul away expenses.
Since the old cabin was very indicative of a lot of cabins still on the Lake, the Fire Department and I both hope it was very useful training in case of a very real occurance.
The local fire department gathered trainees from various voluntary fire departments around the Lake to enhance the training and safety for all of us.

If you are sure he knew he was causing a problem for you, I would have approached him politely at first. If he wasn't cooperative, then I would have gotten in his face about it. Although there likely no rules or codes against what he was doing, it doesn't give him the right to make it a problem for you. No one likes to have a problem with their neighbors, but sometimes something has to be said. Some people deserve to be confronted.

The incident of which I speak was about six or seven years ago... BTW, shingles are considered toxic when burned, unless they are cedar. The training method sounds just like what we did untill we were busted. : ) I probably was in one of those type cabins in the late eighties, as my father had a place somewhere around the Eclectic side of Sand Island... I don't remember where.

We are more on the Equality side, and I think it was the Ray Fired Dept that sponsored the training.
I guess the best thing in the future would be to strip off the shingles. That may of been done. I was not here, but a fellow Forum member sent me some great pictures of the burn. It was awsome.
You could see the firemen rushing in and out and doing their rescue drills and then the rest of the controlled burn.
We owe a lot to you and the others who are able to and also volunteer for such service.

one, but cleared about a quarter acre for a neighborhood garden couple of weeks ago.. had friends and neighbors over to help, borrowed backhole from a buddy.. we burned, and the fire department knew it.. was a fun experience.. but we get along just fine.. but I do indeed live in a rural part of the lake.. PS.. no tires..
