Left leaning parties took a beating from right-leaning parties in the EU elections that were just held.

The same will be happening here. Interest rates rising, inflation heating up, high unemployment and rising, huge deficits, increasing taxes, government taking over businesses, rising oil prices, government run healthcare.

I mean, what is there not to like about the liberal socialist left agenda.

Oh I forgot, it is all Bush's fault. Odd that he took over a recession (a bad one), got hit with 9/11, yet was still able to grow the economy moving, increase employment, lower taxes, businesses prosper and the stock market sore to new highs.

Interesting.
What are they saying about BO and the US these days?

Always interesting to read foreign papers to get their take on what's goin on in the US.

Don't know - only been here a few hours. Will be spending some time with the populace and I am sure the subject will come up. Will let you know, because on a previous trip I was asked "is the US REALLY going to elect Obama?"

When you say a move to the right in Europe that is a bittersweet movement at best. Europe has become so inculcated with the socialist culture that positions taken by those on the "right" in Europe would center-left to left in the U.S. although with Obama even the term "left-wing" is being redefined to approximate that of Europe.

Europeans have come to accept stagnant economies as a result of over taxation. They accept as normal 10% unemployment. Their idea of lowering unemployment is to mandate a 30 hour work week so more people can get a job.

Here's an interesting question for you. Name one person of significance in all of Europe that is not a politician or celebrity.

Some examples in the U.S. for business alone: Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Jack Welch, Steve Jobs, Meg Whitman.

I'm sorry if that news isn't good enough for you, but to me at least it is an indication that things might move in the right direction.

All I did was report the news that I saw on TV when I got to Rome this morning.

Its good news for sure. I was simply pointing out that a move to the right in Europe does not literally equate to a move to the right in the U.S.

When I was in the military we had a saying (among thousands) "don't shoot the messenger".

I guess less abysmal is better than totally abysmal. Maybe the next step is just a little abysmal???

I appreciate your observations. It's always interesting to see what the foreign press is saying about the US and how it coincides with what we're reading and hearing here.
It could be an indication fo the start of a global trend.

I agree with Hound. It is generally good news and I truly wasn't trying to shoot the messenger, maybe just temper the message. There has been a lot of interesting chatter from various quarters in Europe telling us we are crazy to follow in their footsteps vis-a-vis socialism. What they know from experience is how hard it is to take a step back, let alone a complete retrenching, after the masses sell their souls to the government fantasy of everyone living at the expense of everyone else.

I think what scares the you-know-what out of Europe is they have basically funded their socialism because the U.S. has funded their national defense and spent trillions to defeat the USSR without firing a shot. Not only do they realize their economic fate is inexoriably tied to ours but if we abandon their defense in favor of domestic entitlements as Obama is doing they will suffer greatly either in terms of having to actually pay for their own defense (which they cannot afford) or risk all sorts of mischief making on the European continent from the east.

Either way they are screwed if we continue on our current disasterous course.
