I do not mean to ruffle any feathers; but I probably will anyway. I am curious if smooth water is necesary for surfing behind a boat. To me, it does not seem that smooth water is necesary as you are purposefully creating a huge wave and wake and the boat smooths out any chop. If smooth water is not needed, then why do surfers like to go into protected sloughes and beat the heck out of all of the docked boats, swimmers, and shorelines. It would be much better if they stayed in the open water where they would not cause damage to other people's property, but maybe smooth water is needed.

I understand skiing needing smooth water and at those speeds, the wake is small, but we have people creating 3 to 4 foot wakes in tight creeks and sloughs (Elkahatchee Creek). Just curious. Thanks

Daddy probably makes them leave their slough.

As far as the property damage - Mrs. Summer says that the only question on the vessel license exam should be "Are you responsible for damage caused by your wake?". She thinks it is that the boaters are inconsiderate, I wonder if they are just too stupid. I do not see why you plow your boat in circles in a protected slough - seems like it would be more fun out in the larger areas of the lake that are already agitated. I guess it is just more of the "me" problem we have in this country.

Surfing can be done in some chop, but it dosen't work well in very rough water. It's best in smooth water (to create a perfect wake) and that is probably why some abuse your slough. We surf, but only in areas where I can keep the boat several hundred feet from docks and shore. We have no problem with finding open areas that work even on the weekends.

Most are not as thoughtful, and it is more the people dragging tubes than those who are surfing who are creating the wake hazards. The slough that we are in is about 420 yds wide at our place, but is cut down to around 280 yds about 100 yds past the cabin. When you have boats pulling tow toys in erratic paths, and others coming from or returning to their places farther in, the place is a mess. It seems like all eyes in the boat are on the towed, and none are watching the bow. About three years ago 2 PWC that were running together collided just past where the slough gets smaller, I expect to see many more such accidents from the boating "skills" I am seeing this year.

Well if i ruffle feathers i do not care! I remember when you were responsible for your boats wake and i wish we still were! Surfing has no place on our lake or any other lake far as that goes! It is destructive and dangerous to other boaters and it should be outlawed!!

The old "it's all about me" syndrome....no "anything other than what I want" should be allowed.

Some folks don't want realfast boats, some don't want wakeboard boats, some don't want jet skis, and some don't want any boats at all (I'm sure I missed somebody).

But when it all boils down to what is reasonable, it's really about who tries to do what they like with some measure of respect, and who realizes it is a public lake and not their own private domain.

Great question. I was beginning to think I was the only person at the lake who was bothered by the tidal waves that these people make with their boats in close quarters.

I think I know what wake boarding is. But what is it called when people pull those big tube like things behind their boats? It sure looks like fun for the kids that are riding.

Last weekend we were out on our pontoon. Lots of boat traffic, yet I saw a number of boats pulling kids on those tubes. And made me think that it could be a little dangerous if one of those tubes flipped and knocked the kids off into the water with so much boat traffic.

I think it is called "pulling those big tube like things behind their boats"

Glad to help. I am one of those "pullers". It is my four year old grandson's favorite ride. But I agree with you about the danger in heavy traffic. I cannot believe some of the places I see people "tubing". I am fortunate to have a large slough nearby that is away from most traffic.

Don't you think "large slough nearby" is a little understated? How about REALLY close by?

When I see kids doing it, it looks like so much fun that I wish I was a kid again.
I'm glad you have a place to give your grandson his thrill ride, and keep him safe too.

I bet the answer is NO, but she may want you to take FEB for spin or two - LOL.

She will not even ride a ferris wheel. She gets sick when she rides in my bass boat. This is even before I can get enough speed to get it on plane.

She does not like it when I get above 20 MPH on the Pontoon. It blows her hair.

What can I say? She is not a candiate for a ride with the Cat.

Now a nice slow SanPan pontoon boat ride is good with her. My dogs actually get bored. LOL

interesting thread, i wakesurf a fair amount and have been for the past 4-5 years. i get my boards shaped from a guy in cali. (www.thewalkerproject.com) and think it's a great sport that pretty much anyone can learn and enjoy. i don't think that is proper boating etiquette to wakesurf in a tight slough considering the wake we put out.. it can be done in big open water and you don't need glass to surf on, but it is a nice.. none the less, there are tourist out there that look at houses at half plane waking boats/docks to death that don't even give you something fun to watch.
