Alright, I have a question for the old timers. It's my understanding that Bear Bryant had a place on Lake Martin that he visited regularly during the offseason. Does anyone know where on the lake his place was?

I have no idea where he lived, but my mom( now 87) stood behind him one day at Robinson's Grocery (now Lake Martin Mini Mall) When she realized who he was she looked him up and down, came home and said she didn't know why everyone was so excited about Bear Bryant 'cause he had the ugliest legs she'd seen on a man in a long time!. Oh well, you can't have everything can you?

I don't know if he had his own cabin, but I know that he played golf regularly at Willow Point. I believe he stayed with "Mr. Tare Away" Hardy, who developed the Tare Away Jersey that Bama used successfully in the 70's until it was outlawed.

Interestingly enough Mr. Hardy's son, a local dentist and star of the cult movie "TROLL II" was a cheerleader at Auburn

He did have a place here for years and at one time I knew where it was but that was a long time ago. If my recolection is correct it was in the area off hwy 63 as mentioned in a previous post. Coach Bryant and Coach Shug Jordan were actually very good friends and they spent lots of time together on Lake Martin.

I don't know, but you may have it pegged.

from my understanding he never owned or leased a cabin but would visit often, back then they had a lot of rental cabins close to Kowaliga Bridge on each side. That's where he met Toppy Hodnet and hired him. I'm pretty sure this was mentioned in a Lake magazine article a couple of years ago.

According to a book I read a few years back, Hank Williams also used to stay in one of those Kowaliga-area cabins. (So did my family, a few times back in the mid-50s right before my folks rented a Russell cabin up here in 55 or 56.) I remember it only vaguely, but I do remember staying in one of those cabins a time or two and swimming in a roped-off shallow area with a hauled-in mini-beach nearby. I;d have been about 5 or 6 years old.

Hank may have stayed in the rentals, but I think that most often he stayed at Darwin Dobbs' old Russell cabin. That is the one that they have recreated as a museum of sorts, in Children's Harbor slough. Drive by the lighthouse on your right, it's the second one or so on your right. They used a lot of the Dobbs and Chappell family photos and home movies to restore it as close as possible to historical accuracy.

The Bear Bryant cabin was located in the back of the slough that the wet slips at Kowaliga Marina are. I spent a lot of time there growing up. My mother and Mae Martin were pals and I sometimes spent the night there as sort of a for lack of a better word "house sitter." The cabin was located in the area off Motes Road, off Prospect Road.
