On our way back to the house yesterday we noticed lots of fish floating in the sandy creek area. We saw 6 or 7 in a small area. It seeded unusual and they were HUGE fish! They were all probably 1 1/2 long. Does anyone know what could be going on?

If they were stripped bass it is not uncommon for them to die when we have high temps like we have had for the last couple of weeks.

We were up in the narrows of the creek over the weekend and noticed hundereds of dead small (about 2") fish that were light brown in color. Not sure what they were but I've never seen that before.

That does not sound good to me. Someone should get someone to do some water quality testing to ensure there is not a problem.

If it was a water quality issue there would be thousands of dead fish, not a couple of dozen.

Not necessarily. Sounds like an outside source to me. Could be a chemical causing oxygen depletion, bacteria, or could, to some extent, relate to a study using electronic shocking devices by the DNR (which would be a best case scenerio.) Normally the shocking would only kill if the electrical current was at a high voltage.

Could also (in the case of the smaller fish) be a result of a fire ant infestation somehow ending up in the water.

Well, dmp said 100's and I've never seen that many dead fish in sandy creek. It's at least odd and worth an investigation.

I'm glad someone agrees it's strange. We thought they might have been off a trot line or something. Who would you go through to get that checked out? Wildlife and fisheries or something like that?

I have also seen bunches of dead fish after schools of striper go on a serious feeding frenzy.

Contact Lake Watch (see URL below)

Lake Watch was formed in 1991 as an all-volunteer non-profit organization in response to citizen concerns about point-source pollution that posed an ecological threat to Lake Martin.

Lake Watch has grown into an organization with three main areas of interest:

-conducting scientific studies through its volunteer water quality monitoring program
-increasing public awareness of water quality issues
-emphasizing through educational initiatives the importance of water quality

LakeStone, you've already received my email response but maybe other posters might be interested.

The fish were likely striped bass that were the victims of a combination of things: high water temperature, low dissolved oxygen, and getting trapped in a low-oxygen zone from which they were unable to escape. It usually happens in July-August but we've had unusually hot temperatures for this time of the year.

Lake Watch volunteers do monthly testing in the Sandy Creek area...and in several other areas...and we've not detected anything that would account for fish kills. In fact, we're currently involved in a 7-month concentrated lake testing program that includes the Sandy Creek embayment. More on that later.

Thanks for your concern. Dick Bronson

Thank you for the info Mr. Bronson, my wife's aquarium is on Sandy Creek, and I was getting concerned that I would have to build some sort of water filtration system for "her" fish.

The rumour here in Sandy Creek is that these belly-up fish appeared shortly after the Premier Pontoon with the twin 350's cruised out to the big water.

Hi Dick - just wondering whether you have a recommendation for someone to pump our septic tank. The outfit that did it when we bought the house seems to be out of business. Thanks, Jeff Kennelly
