Lots of zingers fired around today, but I'll take my chances with this question. My pontoon has a "shallow" alarm which is set for 6 feet (don't know how to change it, but that's not the question). My only 2 trips to Chimney Rock (really Acapulco Rock, I think), my "shallow" alarm has gone off constantly. Even thought the depth shows I am clearly in very deep water, the alarm continues to go off. The question: is there something under the water causing the alarm to go off in that area? That location and my dock are the only places it goes off. Of course, at my dock the depth shows 4.5 feet so I expect that - just not at the rock. Any ideas other than shut it off?

Go to Boat Maintainance and read the next to last post. This maybe your problem... low fluid levels and the alarm is not depth related. Check the manual. One way to verify when this occurs is to turn off the depth finder to see if the alarm continues. However, I would not take it back out before you do the check of all fluids.

Are you certain that it is a "shallow" alert, not a "deep" alert? If the depth gauge is showing an accurate reading of greater than 6', the shallow alert may not be your culprit. Now the other answer you were expecting - CAT has a submarine that he pilots around The Rock, and that may be causing your alarm to go off - next time it happens simply beat the water with your paddle and yell "CAT" until he surfaces and provides you with a Miller Lite.

I understand there are a lot of exposed bumpers at Chimney Rock. Your alarm may be picking these up, or picking something up.

He doesn't GIVE the Miller Lites, the takes them as a bribe to stay away from you shallow water transducer.

I reread your post and I am confused. I initially read the constantly to mean it stayed on the entire trip. The upon rereading I now see that it only went off at the dock and at the rock. The latter would not appear to be fluid related. I recall seeing a dramatic change in depth the only time I went to the rock as I traveled between the islands. I noticed on my depth finder the change and planned to return to fish which I never did.

You may want to post on the SCUBA thread to see if a diver can help with what is down there. If you have GPS, provide the divers with the coordinates.

Yall can come up with some crazy stuff. Seems like Rooster had some sort of depth alarm issue while back. I'll go back and read.

I went back and read the thread on the maintenance forum. The poster asked a question about an inboard/outboard. Mine is a 115 Yamaha outboard 4 stroke. The alarm I speak of is a "beep beep" in both instances - in my slip and at the Rock. It's the same noise. I have been told that if I hear an "engine alarm" it is a different sound and comes from a different part of the boat. In my earlier post, when I say constant alarm at the Rock it's that beep beep in front of the Rock then quits when I move on toward Dixie and Goat Islands. I don't want to harm the engine obviously. The engine is pumping water as I'm moving. Usually we're just putting by the Rock and the engine is not under any stress. I've reviewed the manuals and cannot find any answer to this. Before I bought the boat (5/1/09) the previous owner had it dry stored and had it summerized before I took possession. I'm stumped but don't want to do anything dumb.

Our boat has Faria gauges, and if I get the "shallow" alarm, there is a flashing "SH" on the depthgauge. I do not have the "deep" alarm set, so not sure what would show under those circumstances, but the area you describe is very deep - I believe "Blue Hole" is about 150'. Ours is a stern drive, and the alarm for oil pressure is a solid tone, but that also comes from the dash.

Is the sensing device for the alarm omnidirectional or linear? If it is linear, it might be pointing in an outward direction.

Oh boy. Am I opening myself up now? I don't know the difference.{Duck}. I am wondering if there may be an answer in one of the above posts. Maybe I have a "deep" alarm set somehow as well as a "shallow" alarm. If there is truly a Blue Hole at the rock of 150 feet, maybe the alarm is set for notification just as it would be for shallow.

Makes me go hmmmmmmmmm.

No need to duck - most of us throw low anyway... Our depthgauge has adjustments for keel offset, and both shallow and deep warnings. As much as I hate to admit, I did take the time to read the manual that came with it (I am now ducking - quack quack). Must have been a Temporary Lapse of Reason - or beer- related incident.

I read my manual too, cover to cover. But, since I cannot understand English written with oriental syntax, I resorted to trial and error at the dock and looking at the pretty pictures.

I was talking about the manual for the depthgauge which appears to have been written by someone who has a working knowledge of the English language, not the manual for the bumpers - if you are able to figure that one out, please advise.

Sorry...
omni (from Latin [omnis]:all) directional sensors sense distance in ALL directions. Hence, as you are approaching the sheer rock walls the sensor might be picking up a close proximity between the boat and the rocks and interpreting that as a shallow depth.

A linear sensor senses in a straight line (like a gun shoots). If the sensor is correctly pointing in a downward direction, it can only detect the vertical distance of non-obstructed water available to navigate in. That being said, if the linear directional sensor is pointing in a non-vertical direction it too will interpret near horizontal objects as "shallow" water.

Check to see if you also have a upper range set. Most alarms can be set to signal a depth below a certain depth as well as over another depth setting. If you've got the upper range set to 100" or something along those lines, that may be triggering it in very deep spots.

Some of the other suggestions are good as well - check gear fluid in particular.

Good luck!
