Watched the concert and fireworks from the Amphitheatre last night and if there is a better place to watch the fireworks in this country, I would like to know where it is. I have watched fireworks from many of our larger cities and you always have lights distracting from the fireworks. Not so in the middle of Lake Martin where you are surrounded by almost total darkness. Also, almost as good as the fireworks is looking down at all the colors (red, green, white) out in the water after dark. Just wish you could get a photo to show it. Also can report I only saw one pontoon boat running around with their docking lights on.

Speaking of lights;
Do I not understand the law?
Every boat I saw last night watching the show and not under way had there Nav "Side Lights" on. As I read, understand and do, when not underway, only the all around white or Mast light and Stern light are to be on.
I have been wrong more than once in my life and may be 3 times now :)

Indeed, the proper light to use when anchored is the white one...the others are intended to be running lights so that others can determine one's direction of motion...but last night I found the running lights very helpful as we negotiated the field of boats on our way to our favorite viewing spot.
Now the idiotic behavior of the boat that was anchored with no lights at all....well that is a different matter. In a way I am hopeful that there was an electrical problem. That can be fixed. Idiocy, on the other hand, seems to be a permanent situation.
And the jerk who watched the entire fireworks show with his dock lights on is even another story.
Seems to me that there were more boats than ever out there last night. When we left to go back to the Parker Creek area it looked like there was a major superhighway running down the center of Lake Martin! They all seemed to be going about the same speed, which made navigation better, and the rogue waves seemed to be less this year (not to say that there wasn't a surprise or two).

Snuck away a little early and made it past the 63 bridge going west before the finale was over. Best fireworks show I have ever seen and the weather could not have been better.
Almost home with no mishaps then hit a rogue wave that had to be 5 feet or more. Took a tremendous amount of water over the bow (24' Bennington pontoon) and everyone got completely soaked but it was really fun since no damage was done.

Every year is better than the year before...(well,,,,maybe)...and I have been saying that for 32 years. We have been going out in the water to look at the fireworks "forever" and our grandkids say we have to get underneath them. It is great. Granted, the ride home is a little bumpy, but with my "better half" at the wheel, I have no concerns. If you don't go out, at least once, in your Lake Martin life to see the fireworks, consider yourself a "wiennie"... and oh, by the way, what a great storm today. Lots of rain and my grass got watered. Yeah.

Low blow. I happen to agree with him/her. There are many ways to be in the thick of the fireworks, yet travel home safely and without angst. It indeed is a sight to behold, both the fireworks themselves and the liyeral city of boats parked to view them - and every lake person should experience it at least once.
BTW, I have no problem whatsoever with my own testosterone levels, nor do I think the post was intended to make the poster feel more of a "man". Maybe you need to be a bit more introspective.

We left right at the conclusion, and had a couple near miss rogues, but no real barnburners. I do remember the night about 8 yrs ago when the thunderstorm popped up just as the fireworks ended. The rain was hitting my daughter's face so hard she thought she was being shocked, and our ski boat tried to play submarine through one of those five foot rogues. The thermal shock put out our running lights so we had to be especially wary that those around us knew which way we were going!

Most of the boats viewing the show probably are always "under way," even if they are sitting still. I would bet that very few are anchored and/or have the engine turned off.
Looking at it from a common sense perspective, leaving the navigation lights on in such a situation makes a lot of sense. When you have thousands of boats in one area, some sitting still and some always on the move, it can't hurt to have navigation and anchor lights on, always. Anything you can do to make others aware that yes, you ARE a boat, is good.

That is news to me because I think on my boat the red/green and white light in the back come on together but I could be wrong. I will check it out to be sure. Having said that, it seems to me that it is not easy to distinguish between a single white light and shore lights. The red/green are unmistakable. But the law is the law.......

I think you'll find the law states that you should have on only your anchor light (all around light) of you are in fact anchored. If you are stopped but adrift you should have on your navigation lights.
Having said that, I believe given the very close proximety of all of the boats I would leave on my nav. lights even if I was anchored. Making your boat more visible (without blinding others, i.e. docking lights) seems like a prudent move in that situation.

we were at ground zero as always, and I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of huge waves after it was over. Usually it gets tidal, but it was actually pretty calm. I heard reports that there were not that many (relatively) right in front, that most people were to the east or west, so maybe that skewed my observation. But for the most part, it looked like everyone (that was right in front) sort of idled away slowly.

All the lights...red, green, & white...must be displayed when the boat is "underway". Underway means anything other than anchored or tied to a dock or the shore.
The white light, or anchor light, should be displayed while anchored. As someone else said, with that much traffic it's a good idea to keep all the navigation lights on, anchored or not.

When we camp on the boat I don't want to get to close to the island and snakes so I stay about 30 feet off shore and would show a mast and stern light.
You cleared up any questions I had.
Also I do see how it was a good idea to have had all the lights on in that parking lot of boats the other night.

Take a chill pill. You can call me a "wiennie" because I won't go on the Sea-Doo when it is choppy....I don't care.
Whatever your opinion, seeing the fireworks by water, at least once in your Lake Martin lifetime, is a great experience.
