I would like to see a response on this thread of who would (agree or disagree) to post under your real name. My feeling is that it doesn’t take any guts to post trash when you can hide under an alias. It would be a different matter if you could identify the person taking cheap shots at you. I don’t think you would have to ban anyone from this forum if you could place a face with the person taking shots at you. There is a ton of “good natured” bashing that goes on here and it is all in fun. And much of it is by people who know each other. But this thing that went on the other night (and I admit I stayed up and read it all until Feb signed off to go to bed) could lead to something none of us want to see. Fun is fun but that thing went to a point past fun. Just wonder what some you think. PC Al = Alton Thompson on Parker Creek

I agree. But then again, I hide out at a whole different lake. But I still ove Lake Martin.

I must admit, I read some of it and was honestly ashamed and I don't even have a dog in that fight. Must be morbid curosity. Kinda like watching MJU's funeral or whatever they called it. At least until it made me sick

Peace,

I like the Forum just as it is with an alias. Being anonymous is part of the "lure" and fun of a forum. Take away the alias of the poster, and you eliminate information/opinions/ideas/remedies of people who are just not comfortable with anything more Public.
The Webmaster has the ability to control unacceptable posts, and he has in this case as well as before. I do not want the fabric of the Forum to be changed because of an event that is of no importance to the Forum or to many of the users.

I don't think that anyone is advocating removing the ability to use an alias, and while it can be far more descriptive doing so, having a name and/or face associated with it CAN add a bit of value to some posts. My parents taught my brother and I responsibility when we were growing up, something that I know is not in vogue now. We live an almost anonymous existence with the internet, emails, and disposable phones – perhaps that is the result of a lack of that “R” word. We are sharing our love of the lake on this forum, and that alone should bring most of us together.

Disclaimer: This post is in no way meant to insinuate that we should all hold hands, sing KumByYa, turn towards Mecca, or be Republican or Democrat, just that we do have something in common no matter how different we are.

The "Sweet Home Alabama" facebook site gives forum members the opportunity to use their real names, identify their connections and locations to the lake, etc. BTW-beautiful on the lake today, thanks for the 6 hour tour on the water Capt. J., thoroughly enjoyed by all!

I can see revealing one's identity, but I can also see using a screen name just to keep things a bit anonymous and fun.

In my case I choose to reveal my identity to those I wish to have it by exchanging emails. BTW, Mack, I came by this past weekend but didn't see anyone on your dock, and went over toward lakengulf's place but wasn't quite sure which place belongs to him.

Otherwise, anyone keeping up with the posts will know I am a retired Air Force officer, with a weekend cabin in the Parker Creek area (hopefully one of these days a full timer). You will also know that one of my early Air Force assignments was in Turkey, and thus the Nasreddin Hodja screen name (the Hodja was obviously Muslim, and I am about as non-Muslim as they get). So what difference does it make what my name is? There is always the email option to open a more personal line of communication.

All that being said, if real names were to be required for forum participation, I would still be in.

So, for the moment, color me "undecided".

Nasreddin Hodja

some will never be civil and it would be hard to verify those determined to scam the system on a public forum. Like P.C. said, we have a private facebook page with about 50 members for those who want personal interaction with their lake neighbors and other forum members.....send me an e-mail if interested.

I will use my real name because I try not to write anything I will be ashamed of or wouldn't say to somebody's face. That said I am sure also some will not want to show themselves in the light of day. LOL

I have belonged to one forum for over 10 years, and a break off forum from there for 5. I've always used my name and I don't perceive I would have had any more fun with an alias. It's different because in those forums we post a lot more pictures and therefore it feels more personal. We have members from all over the world.
Over the years there have been trouble makers, but they were banned by the administrators and stayed banned. Some people who distrupted the peace got some peer pressure and realize the only way that the members of the community would allow them to participate would be if they played nicely.

Maybe I don't feel I need an alias because I don't feel like I assume an on-line persona. Who I am here is who I am.

Hodja, when you leave your slough come across Parker Creek to the RL land of trees. Follow tree line to the first house. Was not around the weekend of 4th, family gathering elsewhere, but will be in the water this weekend.

That is what I thought I remembered, and indeed your house did (for your sake, thankfully!) look unoccupied.

For what it's worth, I will throw in my 2 cents. I would imagine that thieves, burglars, and other crooks could use forums like this seeking information that would help them. Using your real name or location could be bad if you slip up and post too much about your whereabouts.

Be there this weekend? I may be up Saturday afternoon late and more than likely most of Sunday afternoon. Have to run the sound board at church in MGM Sunday AM, so will be burning up Highways 9/231.....

Real names? You MUST be kidding. I would never consider posting my real name, or anything about me... NO WAY! I'll just be CAT. I've even been called a girl on this forum. I mean think about it... CAT is well known for developing and marketing the famous "HO's Hangout". Swooping in and turning off beep beep alarms on boats, and flashing "CAT" signs in the sky like Superman. >>> I kinda like the forum like it is.
