A new Pew Research report on American attitudes toward science finds that 55% of scientists identify as Democrats, while 32% identify as independents and just 6% say they are Republicans. When the leanings of independents are considered, fully 81% identify as Democrats or lean to the Democratic Party, compared with 12% who either identify as Republicans or lean toward the GOP.

What value could this post have? Does it prove that they are liberal? No surprise ... look at the BS some were preaching on global warming when the facts do not support it?
I am baffled by the point of your post? In one respect I would love to see the source as it probably speaks for itself, but on the other hand, I don't care because this is so meaningless?
What is your point?

I'm not sure it's a scientific sampling, but I managed an office of 50 engineers and scientists. Just my observations -
Scientists are very conservative, and they are skeptical of change for change sake. Any changes have to be thoroughly debated and justified. They definitely don't "drink the Kool-Aid".
I think the majority supported stem cell research, but, I'm pretty sure that most of them believed in less government intervention.
If I had to guess about their political leanings, I would think that it would be Independent, with ring wing leanings.
One observation that has always fascinated me -- a large majority of them are married to very artsy women, who presumably who have more democratic leanings. Go figure.

Hound: I agree with you about scientists and their political leanings. I have worked with thousands of them over the last 20 years and they are majority center-center right. I am not convinced that this poll is correct. Again, you need to look at internals, methodology, sample size, etc. If they just polled scientists that work for the government it would not surprise me if they leaned to the left but even in academia they are center-center right.

For its part, the public does not perceive scientists as a particularly liberal group. When asked whether they think of scientists as liberal, conservative or neither in particular, nearly two-thirds (64%) choose the latter option. Just 20% say they think of scientists as politically liberal. However, a majority of scientists (56%) do see members of their profession as liberal.
Most scientists had heard at least a little about claims that government scientists were not allowed to report research findings that conflicted with the Bush administration’s point of view. And the vast majority (77%) says that these claims are true. By contrast, these claims barely registered with the public – more than half heard nothing at all about this issue. Only about a quarter of the public (28%) said they thought the claims were true.

Your posts are very confusing ... cutting and pasting randon information about political views ... what is the point?
How about we post the political leaning of bankers, attorneys, CPA's, CEO's .... etc
What is you fasination with the political leanings of scientist?
If YOU have a point of view you want to share, fine ... but who cares about suveys of a single profession and their political leaning. Especially when there are thousands of different scientist.

This is based purely on my experience.
Engineers and scientists in the government are paid for their technical expertise. But, the government is run by politicians. Engineers and scientists generally do not like political realities. They like to deal in facts and truthfully sometimes facts do not fit with political reality really well. So sometimes their technical findings do not rule the day. They don't like this much (trust me on this, I used to give this speech to engineers and scientists at least once a week). Doesn't matter which Administration is in power -- as long as politicians are running the government.

Being an engineer who did not work directly for the government, I faced the same unpleasant realities even in the corporate world. Seldom are CEO's engineers unless the company is a purely engineering firm. Corporate decisions are not always influenced by politics, but the black and white world of an engineer is not always welcomed in the CEO's world of gray. But we sleep well at night.

I think she's pointing out that smart people tend to be less wedded to the hide bound past and therefore think of themselves as "liberal". I pointed out in a previous post that exit polls showed that people with post grad degrees and those making over $250000/year favored Obama while those who dropped out of high school voted McCain. WW posted a comment siting how much better Jews are as far a business success, education and number of Nobel prizes than are Muslims. He is correct. I wonder how the brilliant mind of WW explains how his fellow Americans who are of the Jewish persuasion also voted for Obama by almost 2:1. I know he will come back and rant that this post is not relevant. Well maybe not in his mind but it is in mine!

as long as it is relavant for you, that is all that matters. wink.
Not sure where that poll came from, where i live and work there are many highly successful people and many of the jewish faith, and I have to say they do not fit your polling.
But it does not suprise me that you want to keep backing someone that is creating destruction of this country, but when asked several times you can not even say one thing that you think BO has done since in office that is good, the right direction for the country and where you expect it to lead to.
So really, why would I take anything you say seriously when you do not even have enough backbone to say what you are supporting in terms of policy and direction.

And you know, that's what I used to tell the Engineers and Scientists. They give the facts to the decision makers and the rest is on the decision maker. If they make a stupid decision, well, at least they had the techical facts.

is that liberals are smarter and believe in the scientific method more than conservatives??? Have a bit of a problem beleiving the conclusion, being a math/physical science major but I may be wrong.. Most of my liberal friends (and I have a few) are touchy feely, "liberal arts' majors.. And not all that much smarter than I..

52%of those making over $200,000 voted for Obama. Wow, a whopping 2% victory in the "Elitist" group. Funny, I was always under the assumption that this group was the greedy, uncaring Republican stronghold.
Obama got 96% of the Black vote but, let's not jump to conclusions and assume race was involved in this election.
Obama got 66% of the Hispanic vote. I'll let you figure out why.
Obama got a vast majority of the under age 30 vote. Ohhhh to be young and idealistic again. Methinks this group may change once they take on some personal fiscal responsibility, own a home and have a family and, egads, actually start paying taxes. Yes, I'll admit, just a guess on my part but, it certainly influenced me.
Finally, McCain's votes came from the middle aged, middle income and those with a college degree but, not post-graduate degree. The educationally "enlightened" of course, voted for Obama.
So, it seems, the Messiah, the man for the middle class, lost the largest demographic he claimed to represent. Although, by now, I think we all know who he truly represents.
