like i said before i am keeping fish in this tank, circulated by the well water. is there a good filter that might clear the water up a bit as well as remove some impurities. No one will be drinking the water so nothing special is needed here. any suggestions, and also i have not yet done the water test, and if the fish live in this water fine i will probably skip that process. thank for all this help guys!

Go to Home Depot or Lowes and look in home appliances or plumbing for a whole house filter. They are not that ezpensive. Have you thought about using lake water??????

Yes make sure the filter is fish friendly, i.e., does not remove oxygen.

is that the fish will be fine. I would add the new water in increments if the fish are established or try some inexpensive fish first if starting from scratch.

Exactly, cause then you would only have hydrogen and the fish will not live in that environment.
Be very careful of what you take out of a lake and put into a fish tank! I have a 55 gallon with a breeding pair of Convict Cichlids and have put drift wood from the lake into it, what a nightmare that was, had an explosion of algae growth, even after boiling water had been used to clean the wood, same with rocks. Best use is tap water, use a start right chemical and wait three days before putting in the fish, after that water changes and cleaning water replaced can be used right after putting in the start right. What fish are you going to keep?

Sorry lakeplumber, could not resist that one, and what you say is correct, do not use a filter system that will reduce the already low dissolved oxygen in the well water. If you decide to use it then make sure to use a good air stone in a bucket to aerate the water before you put it into the tank.

I picked up on your humor from the get-go and had a good chuckle. I do admit that I am not an ichthyologist, but being a plumber, I do know something about water filters. Some use charcoal and might remove the chemical content necessary for fish to thrive. I think that "fish" water has to have some things in it for them to thrive and survive. If the filter removes these things, they die.

the fish are shad and lake water is too warm. i like the temp of the well water. i dont like tap water because i would have to change the water ten times in the first week. the constant circulation of the well water would be perfect. i already use air stones so that would not be a problem. would the filter reduce algea growth you think? this will be an ongoing project of trial and error. i will have a pump in the well to my tank and an overflow back into the well. i feel like the constant exchanging of water will help them thrive as it will not allow a build up of ammmonia from the 100 or so fish in a 130 gallon tank.

that putting the dirty fish water back down the well is such a good idea... there might be people that use the same body of water for their drinking water. Why not use the run off for irrigation? or for some other use? I would just hate to think that I ruined someones drinking water by putting fish poop in the well.

Just my own thoughts on the subject.....
