I have just heard that the firefighter who won his discrimination lawsuit suit against the city of Akron, Ohio, over denied promotions is beuing sccrutinized by the liberal blogs. This was the case where the Supreme Court overruled the court judgment from the court that Sotomoyer sits on.

I guess the moral of this is that things that were done 30 years ago (shooting a paper wad in school; slipping into a ball game; slipping into the drive in theather; or papering someone's yard can come back to haunt you. Politics is cruel. Decentt people will avoid this level of abuse and protect their privacy. The media is trying to unearth everything they can prior to the firefighter's testimony at the Senate hearings for Sotomoyer.

I am familiar with the case, but I don't understand your second paragraph at all. What are you trying to say?

The second paragraph says that the media will attempt to dehumanize the firefighter because his statements will reflect negatively on Solomayor. Any "dirt" that the media can find will be publicized to counter the impact of his testimony that will describe the reasons for the original lawsuit, the ruling by Solomayor and the two other associates, and the final reversal by the Supreme Court.

Are you referring to the New Haven case? Did not realize there was an Akron case. As to the Supreme Court overturning the New haven case was 5-4. As with most cases, Justice Kennedy may well be the most powerful person in the world.

Yes, the NEW HAVEN fireman is being scrutinized by the "liberal" blogs who have found that he originally got his job by claiming he was discriminated against because he was dyslexic.

And just what does that have to do with the FACTS of the case?

Mr. Hodja ... as I understand it (and I am nowhere near being an attorney) ... the firefighter's critics are saying that he used the law preventing discrimination to help him get his job (he has dyslexia), and he is now fighting the very same law saying that he was discriminated against (racial preference). I have no idea who is right and who is wrong in this battle. The one thing I am certain of .... the lawyers are SCUM! Can you tell that I have been sued before? :)

You know, I have friends that are lawyers, and for the most part they are upstanding gentlemen. But then I know them through church. They, unfortunately, get painted with the same brush as the scum-sucking, bottom-feeding, ambulance-chasing, scourge of the earth rest of their profession.

I could tell a story about the "People's Lawyer" here in Montgomery, but it is a second hand story and I won't repeat it. Suffice it to say that what a lawyer professes and what one does is sometimes a dichotomy....

Mr. Hodja ... as usual, I was joking and didn't make myself clear. I too know many lawyers who are fine, upstanding people. My problem is more with their profession than with the attorneys themselves. When I started college, I was a Pre-law major. I visited my grandfather, and he said to me "I hear you want to be a lawyer?" I replied "Yes Sir". He replied "I'm sorry to hear that, because I like you very much .. and I know lots of lawyers, and I don't like any of them". An interesting side-note is that my grandfather's two older brothers were both lawers, and my grandfather attended law school for a year before WWII interrupted. Life is funny. :)

I don't think it is going to matter much about the Firefighter, himself. In fact, I don't know why he would be testifying since he is not a lawyer, and what should be the question is the basis for her LEGAL decision and why she made the ruling she did.

I don't know this to be fact, but my gut is telling me that just about any judge they would propose would have cases where they were later overturned by the next higher level. I'm more interested in the legal precedent and why she ruled the way she did.

While I think that some of Sotomayor's comments have likely been taken out of context, she does seem to be very outspoken and I can see why some people are concerned. I do think they need to add another woman to the Court, and I do think they need to have a Hispanic on the High Court; but whether she is the right person?
Don't know. I'll be watching some of her confirmation hearing.
I hate to think that Supreme Court appointments are being politicized. I really wish they would stick to the persons judicial record.

Why should the next member of the Supreme Court be a woman or a Hispanic? If, as you wished, they stick to their judicial record, would that not transcend gender and ethnicity?

I just don't get this "out of context" BS. When someone is quoted verbatim, how can this be "out of context?" Jes askin.

Yes and no. I think the Supreme Court needs to be representative of the population it serves. I would not want to see a Supreme Court made up exclusively of white males.
But, I think that whomever is nominated has to stand on their judicial record and should not be confirmed strictly because of their gender or ethnicity.

If you read the Snopes link, you'll get an idea of what was taken out of context. But having said that, I agree that it was a very strange comment to make, in or out of context.

Tullahound

Did you know that the new Senator from Mn., Al Franken, is not a lawyer and yet he is the newest member of the judicial committee. I suspect that Senator Franken will be in good company with the other comics on the judicial committee.

I knew Franken is not a lawyer, but no, I wasn't aware he was on the Judicial Committee. Kinda funny, don't you think?

Hilarious.

With all the lawyers in Congress, I find it odd (funny) that they would have a non-lawyer sit on that particular Committee. It just doesn't really make any sense.

they don't have a Comedy Committee -- that's just sort of pervasive throughout the body.
