I have seen some folks doing it in ways that are not safe. Make sure you do your homework and have the proper equipment if you want to try this sport.

Wake surfing is great fun, but please learn to do it safely and in a responsible location.

The article says that you need an inboard boat. I have friends in Santa Monica who are real surfers and also wake surfers. They strictly use I/O boats because they say you can get a better wake without a giant fatsack.

They all use various types of prop guards. I am not sure of the manufacturer, but a goggle image search shows several hundred varieties.

Just wondering why there is an East Coast myth about needing an inboard?

That's a good question. The exact wording from the safety label on a wakeboard says you need a an inboard so that may have started the myth... I suspect that is attorney talk to relinquish manufacturers from liablity. I would think that if they recommended a prop guard, that many people would ignore the warning and surf without one anyway because it was either costly or inconvenient.

I added that verbiage of the safety label to the Wakesurf page on this site. I have a video shot last year of Boomee (OT's husband) surfing. He started last year and has greatly improved. Boomee is his Xbox gamer tag.

Hey, that was a great video. I would love to learn to do that. And Ski to. O well, maybe next year.

I have seen a few surfing examples behind I/O's and one using an outboard; I'm sure they didn't have a prop guard....I posted this only because I don't believe some folks are thinking it through and I'd hate to see someone get chopped up.

Survival of the fittest. Its just nice to know you can pull off a big air and not worry about having your hand chopped off because you fell forward.
