AARP appears to be a broker for insurance companies specializing in supplementary insurance for Medicare insured. Their advertising budget had to be enormous. Earnings from any policy to those companies must come back to AARP. Therefore, AARP appears to have changed its charter and is now functioning as a business. I wonder what AARP's tax classification is and what its earnings from insurance companies are compared to paid memberships.
I also have noticed that AARP appears to be an advocate for universal health-care as proposed by Obama, etc. Is this what its membership is comfortable with? I suspect not and would not be surprised with reduction in membership as a result of its current support of the Democratic leadership and the proposed health care statute.

AARP is an advocacy group for seniors. I listened to one of their commercials carefully the other day and the insurance that they offer is underwritten by Heritage.
They "adopted" me after I turned 50, so I get their magazine and newsletter. I didn't get the impression from the last newsletter that they sent that they are wholeheartedly endorsing Obamas plan. But they do advocate for health care reform, which isn't surprising since I imagine that a high number of seniors do not have secondary insurance to pick up what Medicare doean't pay.

The try to adopt everyone after they turn 50 ... interesting how they have all that info on people. Personally I see zero value in that organization. I sent their card back and asked them to please take me off their list. Does not work ... it keeps coming and I just keep adding it to the landfill.

Their magazine actually has some interesting articles. I think as a group they have done some good work to bring the issues of the elderly to the table.
My uncle had a supplementary health insurance policy with them and it seemed to work for him.

Mrs. Summer has been getting the cards/letters for the past year also. They are a liberal group, claim to be advocates for seniors, yet are anti-gun. OK to sell them insurance, but not to allow them the right of self-defense. Mr. Shredder knows them well..

I'm a seasoned senior citizen and AARP certainly doesn't speak for me. They are nothing more than an organization peddling insurance (life and health) and steadfastly advocating and supporting any liberal government policy that masquerades as a solution but in fact is just an exacerbation of the problem.

Their insurance plans for medicare supplement are quite competitive and work well. They also offer auto insurance and homeowners. They have a discount plan that averages 10% off the lowest room rate at most motels and hotels.
AARP is a NOT For Profit Organization. They also have a foundation and FOR profit service company. They derive their income from various sources. For 2006, their income totaled $1,167 billion, $250 million from dues, $121 million from advertising, $497 million from the various insurance programs they sponsor, $82 grants, $90 million other programs, $80 million investments, and $42 million contributions.
That being said, for year 2006 they show $6.6 million cash equivalent for income taxes.
Just as the NRA serves a purpose for its supporters, so does AARP.

Hmmm. Are you sure about the gun thing? I don't ever recall seeing them take a position on gun control -- but then, I might have skipped an article on gun control. We'll never have gun control in this country.

This was their position a few years ago:
"The federal government must continue to control the availability of
handguns and semiautomatic and automatic weapons. Congress should
reinstate the Brady law's five-day waiting period and should leave in
place the assault weapons ban. States should enact legislation that
prohibits the possession of handguns by juveniles, requires adults who
own handguns to keep them away from juveniles, and prohibits the
possession of guns by convicted domestic abusers."

I remember AARP as a business school marketing case study. Small insurance company that could never get off the ground until they had the bright idea to form AARP and make the older population think they were an advocacy group. Worked well, looked at how many of you thought AARP was looking out for older folks.
They've been an extremely liberal company for years and are loving o-BAMA and his BS.

I have never see any need for AARP. Someway, they knew when I reached the age to become a member and have been sending me advertisements wanting me to join and send them money. Dont'y need them.

The AARP supported and in fact wrote much of W's Medicare drug plan (medicare part D). You remember the one that that well known liberal Tom DeLay brow beat republicans into approving with bribes and blackmail. He even had Hastert hold the House vote open for hours, the longest vote in Congressioal history. That being said, I use several of their insurance offerings which they either sell direct or serve as agent for other companies. They are all excellent. If all you folks weren't so attached to your rightwing blinders you might find some good deals from AARP.

I've never sent them any money. And I don't need their insurance products. But, I read the newletter and the magazine they send. I don't really think of them as a "flaming liberal" organization -- they are just another organization with a point of view. I read what they have to say, and what others have to say and make up my own mind.
I think they have been successful in making "gray power" a force to be considered. I don't think there is anything wrong with that.
