that no one brought up the fact that Tim Geitrner and Larry Summers were both on Sunday morning news shows this week and distinctly left open the possibility of a middle class tax increase to deal with the deficiet. Of course, the WH immediately issued a disclaimer (funny, in one picture Obama was frowning sternly at Geitner and Geitner looked like he was doing a "huma-huma".

So my question is this -- was the WH putting out a trial balloon?
Or is there a split in the Administration?

Hound ... I saw part of Geithner's interview. I think there are people in the (any?) administration that don't think politically, they just think "how do we solve our problems". I think Geithner and others don't want to take anything off the table as possibilities, while there are others in the administration (starting with Obama), who not only want to fix problems, but they understand the political realities. Obama says no tax increases on the middle class .. just like George H.W. Bush said "read my lips ... no new taxes".

My two cents ....

Wouldn't know. I was in church, so didn't see them.

Everyone who pays federal income tax is going to ultimately get a tax increase...there's no other to pay off the massive debt. We conservatives have contended that will be the case since the campaign...I guess Geithner and Summers just now got their calculators working.

I thank Obama's staff realizes the same thing that anyone with some economic studies knows. Taxes are going to go up. Whether it is income tax increases, sin taxes, VAT taxes, or elimination of current tax deductions there will be increases. I think he wants to float the idea that he only meant income taxes when he made the pledges so he will try to avoid the read my lips thing. As the current tax revenues continue to fall they will have to look for other means of tax increases.

Obama has proven to not care about what he said previously ... i always thought he would raise everyones taxes as long as he gets his agenda. He thinks he can give a speech and convince people it is the right this. But thankfully public opinion is changing big time.

Even the lates poll on how people will vote in the next election is very heavily republican. Thank God.

Sorry to say, I think you are dreaming. Yes, Obama's job approval ratings have fallen, but his personal popularity remains high. And while his job approval rating has fallen, Republican approval ratings have not gone up. And the Congressional ratings are in the toilet. Personally believe people are disgusted with Congress in toto.

Has a tax increase ever produced more money in Federal revenue?? I'm not an economist, but if you take more of my money now, I probably will not hire people, or buy more business stuff tomorrow.. Or a house, car or baby shoes.. Whatever..

While mid term elections are a ways off and anything can happen, I will see if I can find the poll/survey that was just recently done (within the last week). It did a national poll asking based on what is currently going on would would be inclined to reelect your current representative / senator or a different party. It came out that where there are democrats 47% would vote for a republican, 33% said they would still vote for a democrat and 20% were undecided.

That seems pretty significant to me.

It also does not help when democrats stand up and say that the republican opposition to Obama's policies have nothing to do with if they are good ideas or bad ideas, it only because they do not like a black man in the white house. (Saw and heard the woman say it myself on FOX). That is nuts. It is ok when the dems did not agree with GB and spoke out, but someone dare not agree with BO and they are just being racist. Nuts.

that is a concept the dems have never gotten. Even though it has been proven to work. Lower taxes create jobs, more consumption, higher tax revenues. I don't know if it is they just don't get that or they believe so much in socialism that higher taxes, more government control is the only way they want to go.

Lower taxes means less government and more freedom of choice and that is not what the dems want. They want to control every aspect of your life and decide who to give money to. The more people are controlled and depend on the government, they feel that assures their reelection since their belief is that people would be afraid to vote against the hand that is feeding them.

Read my post below on Uncle Sam's Plantation. It is so true.

As far as fiscal issues, I agree - the Dems are the ones who will reach through the bottom of your pockets to take any money they can find - call it "generating revenue"... The Repubs however do more than their fair share of legislating morality and trying to control social actions, so let's share the love.

I heard someone on Morning Joe predict that by letting the Health Care vote stagnate over the August recess that it will die come September and not get done.

I'm betting on a tax increase (not a happy thought for us poor old retired people) -- it may not be called a tax increase per se, but it will generate revenue. I wouldn't care as much if I honestly thought that the money would be used to pay down the deficet, but that never seems to happen.

Why do you think o-BAMA wanted the bill passed before anyone could read it. As for taxes, he told you he was going to raise taxes, he told you he was a socialist, yet you still voted for him. ???

Sorry, I didn't understand it quite the way you are chosing to state it. And I wouldn't have voted at all if the alternative was the McCain/Palin ticket. Didn't expect to like everything Obama did, but it beat 4 more years of insanity.

Do you really want to go there? How about Viet Nam and the numerous other wars started by the Democrats idealogues? Or would you rather just concentrate on Iraq, which was originally supported by your cohorts? How quickly we forget.
