I just returned with the wife, daughter, son in law and 5 year old grand-daughter from a birthday party for another 5 year old. While the youngins tore up the playground we old folks sat at a picnic table under shelter. My wife started the conversation by asking a couple who we only see at such events if this party was to be the excitement highlight of their weekend. They said they hoped the highlight would come this afternoon with the receipt of an offer on the 5Br/4.5Ba house they were downsizing from. It has been on the market since January. The price had been lowered over the months almost 10% but through June they had less then a dozen lookers. Since July 1 they have had 30 and are told to expect a contract today. An older woman we also only know slightly opened up by saying that there had been 6 units for sale for months in her 40 unit condo community and that 5 of them had gone under contract in the last 2 weeks. The uncle of the birthday honoree had walked up and joined the conversation. He was down from Chattanooga where he is the part owner of a small restaurant and catering business. Because of an improvement in their volume in the last month they have been able to recall 3 of the 5 staff persons that had been laid off. His wife is a teacher and was breathing easier because "bailout" money had supplemented the education budget meaning no teacher layoffs or furloughs would be required. Since I was an intowner in a suburban setting surrounded by suburb dwellers I dared not bring up politics, but it was refreshing to be in a group of people who almost certainly were mostly McCain voters and not a single one bashed Obama.

As stated, I was a "liberal Intowner" in a setting of "conservative suburbanites". I did not desire to get into any arguments about why their fortunes seem to be improving and chance spoiling the euphoria by suggesting that everything that is and/or was bad is perhaps not completely Obama's fault. What would you have done, told them that the improvments being discussed were in their imagination because such a reality was not possible under the socialist policies of Obama?

It would seem to me that this was the perfect opportunity for you to explain to these people why their fortunes were improving, since you seem to infer that Obama is some how responsible.

As I've said over and over before, I believe that neither the good nor the bad can be fully laid at the feet to either the present or immediate past resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Most of the posters on this forum cannot make such a statement.

that 'most severe economic crisis since the great depression,' inherited from the Bush administration, is over.. President Obama rocks.. This is real 'change', well maybe real 'dollars', considering the trillions of dollars these delightful 5 year old children will have have to come up with to pay for current federal outlays. But hey, they will have socialized medicine, small price to pay..

Thanks. I'm betting tomorrow will be even better because i'm off for a day hike in the N.Ga Mtns. For real, I'll be no where near Buenos Aires. Hope you enjoy your day too.

I had lunch yesterday with a friend/ real estate agent who, for the last 2 years, has had 20 million of listings at Lake Martin. She hasn't sold a thing in 2 years. Her husband is a builder who hasn't built anything in 2 years. Lost their Lake house moved into a 1500 sq. foot ranch and still looking for work. But hey, glad your day went well.

Sounds like they need to move to a less depressed area. I do a lot of major remodel/addition work and I'm turning stuff down.

Where is your Democratic compassion? As you well know, the Lake Martin area has been a booming market for years leading up to the Real Estate Bust. Just wish I could of predicted the fallout like I'm sure you did so, I could have warned them.
And I can't tell you how happy I am that you are turning away business. I'm sure the, soon to be 10% unemployed, share my happiness for you.

from such a believer in the system that rewards those with free market entrepreneurship. If the situation changes in the geographic or professional area of your expertise change one or both. Wonder if you have the same concern for those families who have or soon will lose their healyhcare insurance because the bread winner is out of work?

Based on your aforementioned advice, shouldn't the "breadwinner" just pick up and move to a non-depressed area where he can find work? Seems simple and effortless to me. I thought it was good advice on your part and forwarded it to my unemployed friends. Thanks
