Just completed a boat count from a photo taken by Witty late afternoon, about Allan Jackson time. Count was done with a greatly enlarged aerial photo with good resolution and the aid of a magnifying glass.
Roped anchorage raft up area = 1191 boats and PWC.
Individual and private raft ups from bridge to opposite side of lake to end of boats upstream = 1183 boats and PWC.
Total counted = 2374 Accuracy of count should be within 100 boats. Sure some boats came and went, but 1,600.
4,000 looks like a WAG.
Not trying to detract, just wanted to know.

Your count sounds much more realistic than the 4,000 that has been claimed. Though we will never know, I'm sure that the guesstimate of 12.5 people per boat was an exaggeration too.

I had friends from California in for the Aquapalooza. They are in the event production and management business. They have computer programs that count vehicles and people at events. That is how they get paid for certain events.
The computer program counted everything in the water that was large enough to be a jetski. This was done on different photos and the photo with the largest number of floating objects large enough to be a jet ski was 3623.
One could assume that not all of these floating objects were "boats" but one would also assume that not all boat in attendance were there at the time that any of the pictures were taken.
The computer also counted items that were two small to be jet skis and floating in the water. That number was 12,464. These items were assumed to be people, but could have been beer coolers floats, etc.
The folks from the event management company used these figures to determine that there most likely were between 3000 and 4000 watercraft, including jetskis, and between 30,000 and 40,000 people in attendance.
These people tell me that anyone who claims to get a more precise number, is just pulling it out of his butt.

I would have to agree with ya wix, give or take. All in all it was a great turn out, great show, and I’m ready to do it again - anytime. I really appreciate that everyone was so orderly, unbelievable.

What the he!! does the number really matter? I am green with envy that the number wasn't one more -- I was stuck babysitting a grandkid so my kids could go.
Point is that it was BIG - probably the biggest thing ever at Lake Martin, it was SAFE, with NO deaths (they had four the year before at a much smaller event at Lake of the Ozarks) and few reported injuries, and it was FUN (for those of you who have posted, anyway).
Hats off to Russell for an extremely well organized event and I hope it comes back next year. If it does come back my kids can do their own babysitting or bring him along, 'cause I will be there!

I agree with you completely MrHodja .... either way it was a great event. I have been on Lake of the Ozarks several times, and while it is similar in size to Lake Martin ... the big difference is that it is nearly 97% developed. I was on a 32-foot cabin cruiser and we were rocked around like an 18 foot boat on Lake Martin. Most people really don't realize how lucky we are to have Lake Martin as our home.

If I was getting paid by the number I counted, I may have come up with 6,000. LOL. A computer would have trouble counting boats in all of the aerial photos I saw because of the oblique angle with some boats appearing very large on row one, while same boat would be a speck in the back of the crowd. Not a computer nerd, so I'll stick with a number I know is accurate. BTW, I didn't count all the tubes at the stage, even though they probably looked bigger than a PWC to the computer.
It was, by far, the largest crowd ever seen on Lake Martin, I'm sure.

I hope the other 12,463 people floating around Saturday afternoon had as much fun as I did! I was there almost all day, and I also know many folks that came and went throughout the event. It was great fun and I don't care how many folks attended, but I don't doubt the published figures are quite realistic.
