Atmosphere - GREAT !!!!
Architecture - GREAT !!!
Service - FAIR (Had to ask for our water be refilled every time and no bread refills)
Food Taste - FAIR to AVERAGE (Flounder Fishy and Roast Chicken dry)
Food Portions - SMALL ($9 Caesars Salad and was not any bigger than a small house dinner salad at best. But have to say it was very good.)
Price - HIGH - (Flounder could not have been any bigger than 3" x 6" and very thin and was served with 2 thin slices each of roasted tomatoes and eggplant $28) Dinner for 2 without any drinks for small appetizers and entree was $75.00.
Have to say though they were probably 90% filled on the weekend night we were there and our reservation was not till 8:30.
Lets just say my experience at the Yellow Hammer and upper end BHM and ATL restaurants far exceed my visit to Springhouse, but have not been to Yellow Hammer since the original chef left several months back.
Do not get me wrong the decor / atmosphere is 1st Class all the way and highly suggest all visit. I do not mind paying a premium price for atmosphere, and premium service and food. But when I do I want to be able to say WOW and by no means could I say that regarding SpringHouse.
Next review Chtistophers over Labor Day weekend for 25th Wedding Anniversary and daughter's birthday - LOL.

In my opinion, Christopher's is far and away better than Sprinhouse. When I had the Lamb Chops, there were 6 good sized chops on the plate. My wife had Grouper Oskar, with a crabmeat sauce and it was excellent. Several other posters said the Tuna was excellent. Don't forget to order the "Gumbo and Grits." It is on the top 100 list for Alabama.
Overall, Christopher's is probably not any less expensive but, the portions, presentation and taste are far superior to Springhouse. Also great brunch Sunday morning/ afternoon and tremendous Seafood Buffet Sunday evening.
As far as atmosphere, I'll let someone else who has eaten at both places comment on that because, you can't eat the atmosphere and my main purpose of going to a reataurant is to eat good food.
I know, I am an extermely shallow fellow.

During the discussion yesteray I thought that Christopher's needs to work our a deal with Blue Creek marina (is it still there?) so that customers can dock boat at the marina and call for a shuttle to Christophers. The ride would not be as dusty, and apparently the food would be better.

There is a place in Mt Pleasant, SC at Shem Creek (Charleston area) named the Wreck of the Richard and Charlene. First, it is danmed hard to find, off a back street literally next to a ship repair place, has no sign, and is in what appears to be an old shrimper's warehouse. It is only open 5-8 in the evenings, and the dining room is an old screened porch with a tin roof and no A/C (which probably explains why they aren't open for lunch).
But the food is some of the best in the area. Among the locals it is known as "their little secret".
Sometimes the lack of ambiance IS the ambiance....:>)

What do you mean "The ride not as dusty and the food better." Are you talking about Christopher's or Sprinhouse. And yes, Blue Creek Marina is alive and well.

From your post, and SEVERAL others, it sounds like Christophers has some great food. From some posts about the shuttle to Springhouse it sounded like the golf cart ride could be dusty.

Agree wholeheartedly. Would love to take a late afternoon boat ride from Parker Creek to Christopher, park at the marina, hitch a ride to the restaurant, eat, ride back to the boat, and then motor back to our cabin. Much more pleasant than the drive through Alex City and Dadeville.
Not willing to dock at the marina and walk across the 49 bridge to Christopher. Too dangerous.

Anytime you can view the water, you have a better atmosphere than looking at a post and beam ceiling. Therefore, chaulk up better food and atmosphere for Chritophers.
This is not putting Springhouse down. It is one of the better eating establishments "near the Lake". LOL

Don't know if you would go to Opelika for an excellent dining experience, but I had an outstanding meal at the Warehouse Bistro. It's hidden away in a warehouse district(go figure) but once you find it it is very enjoyable. The website is very informative.

and from what I heard the chef say, if you don't like duck, they'll put the sauce on anything you want.
I tend to agree with Lamont -- food trumps atmophere. The best things I've eaten at Springhouse were the soups, the smoked quail corned bread panazella and their french press coffee is very good. I also like their bread. But, I had some sort of sliced sirloin steak dish that seemed expensive for what it was -- not terribly special. I appreciate the freshness of their ingredients, but I think they could kick up their seasoning a bit.
I don't know if it is when we went -- weeknights or at lunch, but the service can be dreadfully slow. I don't mind a leisurely meal, but one night at dinner I thought that they had to kill the cow. And I don't always find their wait staff that attentive, but I attribute that to their youth and inexperience.
But, it is a gorgeous restaurant. I've never been offered the opportunity to sit outside, but I would love to have that chance.

Brings back memories of Navy days in '67.........believe we found an old back woods place on Shem creek and enjoyed steamed oysters right off the boat.......cold beer........good times before shipping off to the Med for 6 months.......

Had another great meal at Spring House tonight but I still have a problem paying the $4.69 co-op tax in addition to the $6.70 sales tax. I know it has all been explained on here before but I wish they would just include it in the price of food. It is just another tax that I don’t like paying. But, I will go back…….

We ate there for the first time Friday night for our anniversary. As mentioned already the decor is awesome. The service was outstanding and the ride from the pier wasn't bad at all. The food we had was good and we will probably go again with some friends but if I am going to spend close to $150 on a meal I have other places I prefer over Springhouse.
By the way, for people going by water, if the water drops much more it will be tough to get in there. The slough is very shallow. The slips were full so we had to park in front of the pier in 4.5 ft of water. I had to trim all the way up and they pulled us around to tie off.
