A couple of weeks ago, my new Lake Martin friend Rooster introducted me to "beaching". We had a pleasant afternoon swimming and socializing with others who had "beached" their boats. Rooster is an old pro and got his pontoon on (and off) the beach with ease.

So I don't bug him for more pontoon instruction, I thought I'd ask a couple of questions of the forum about beaching a pontoon.

1) What are some advisory tips you'd offer when I attempt my first PLANNED beaching?
2) Does it harm the pontoon logs to beach?
3) So as not to slight anyone, any other information about beaching for non-pontoon boats.

Thanks for the information in advance. Maybe I can atempt to beach by this weekend.

Watch for jagged rocks as they do have the potential (although slight)to puncture a "toon". Also, it helps to get as much weight to the back when you are beaching. There are delicate ways to tell someone to get their fat butt to the back...try "Dave, will you please look over the back rail and make sure the ropes are not dragging", etc. This will allow the front of the toons to get further inland before actually running aground.
Always hurry back on the boat and into the captain's seat when you are ready to leave. This will leave everyone else to pick up the front of the boat and push it back into deeper water. Make sure not to trim the motor down until it is deep enough not to pull mud into the intake.

In the past, as I approached the beach I trimmed the motor up to assure that the prop does not hit the sand or rocks under the water. I tried to keep the prop just under water. Enjoy the beach.

Only the obvious, watch out for the rocks and stumps that could dent or puncture the logs.

One more hint if you have a i/o pontoon. Do not run the engine with the drive unit trimmed up as it can do severe damage to the unit. With an outboard, as mentioned, get a little speed, kill engine, trim engine up, coast in.
I won't beach my deck boat anymore because of possible damage to the gel coat scrubbing the rocks. Just got through re gel-coating the bottom of my boat because my kids beached it. Also, when you beach a boat with an i/o trimmed all the up, there is risk of water ingestion into the engine, under certain conditions.

When approaching the beach, ALWAYS put any LARGE bumpers toward the front of the boat. Please make sure they are greased and oiled so that they are slippery and very very shiney! This will get the attention of anyone else on the beach. At that point simply shut the engine off, and everyone that owns a dock will be happy to gently pull your pontoon up to the beach without harm. Caution, when beaching this way be prepared to be offered cold beverages, Ice, and many other free things as payment to YOU for letting them help.

Cats, .02 worth.

Man, you make me sound like I'm ninety years old, ( which I hope to be someday ). LOL. Did you notice we did everything members suggested, except turning the radio up. Have a good one, enjoyed that day myself.

OK this was taken from another site I go to.....

I said,this ::::
Bumpers all around the boat you say????? Ummmm.

He said this ::::

Yes we do use bumpers in Europe. We use them so we can park the boat anywhere we want without damaging the hull. We also use them for fun as a water toy. Our dog like's to play with the old bumpers. And somethimes people screw them on the wallside in stead of rubbers and ropes. The last owner of our Seacamper could have used them a bit more. Would have saved us a lot of work. A nice day to all from Vinkeveen in the Netherlands.

Then I said..

OK, Never mind, I should just back away from this now while I still can. "smirk"

LOL this is true! Just remember after you oil your bumpers don't smoke. You wouldn't want flaming bumpers....

If you have a big heavy pontoon or you can't grab enough beach and it's windy you might want to tie off two stern lines to the shore.

This sounds awfully risque, especially the parta about screwing up against the wall and something about rubbers and ropes.

Sounds like they are having too much fun in Europe.

Thanks for all the information. I didn't see anyone comment that the pontoona are harmed when beaching, so I assume there is no harm.

One other question: every post I submit somehow turns into a reference to bumpers. Does that mean if I post a query regarding restaurants, someone would recommend the one with the owl as a logo?

Next time you're down at the lower end of goat island at the sand bar, on the north side in the middle of that beach there is a trench cut out where someone did not trim up and had to have hammered the throttle cause there is a trench cut out that is at least 6 feet long and a foot and a half deep from a prop running thru the lake bed. Wonder how much that cost?
