I can't remember which our left leaning posters feigned shock and disgust at the Bush administration for the alleged pressuring of Ridge to raise the threat level because of politics. Apparently he has denied his own statements are true. See below but it appears from reading this that he was bitter that his department and leadership thereof wasn't given the kind of attention as other cabinet posts and so he decided to resign. I am sure Hound can tell plenty of stories of former cabinet officials from both parties that were bent out of shape about how they were treated and lashed out after resigning.

I suspect the current administration has similar potential situations, what with all the czars having their 'unconstitutional' power and some cabinet members appearing to be just figureheads.

It's been interesting watching this thing with Ridge. Fran Townsend came out and said that she was in the meetings and it never happened.

I guess it just depends on who you want to believe.

Hound, I almost think it was intended to generate some free press for his book and it backfired. If you read the second piece in USA Today he sounded like he was still bitter about being on the sidelines in the Bush cabinet.

Ridge has never impressed me much although he seemed to have been a reasonably popular moderate Republican governor of Pennsylvania. Maybe he Peter Principled and was sidelined because he was not well thought of by those with influence in the Bush administration......

At least he had the decency to retract his earlier statements.

Obviously the party goon got to him just as they did Michael Steele, Rep. Gingry, any numerous others before him. DO NOT STRAY FROM THE PARTY LINE!

This isn't about a party line or conservative values or anything like that. And every single one of the people he accused of pressuring him to raise the threat level is either deceased or out of politics. Who knows what motivated him to say it in the first place (except publicity for his book) and I am sure the repudiation from others in the room caused him to backtrack. You are so paranoid it is scary....
