been doing it for several decades, not nuculear brain surgery.. go to walmart, get a $50 combo, get on line and look for a video.. fun fishing, just do it pal.. you don't need lessons to fly fish..

I was wishing that I had a long rod yesterday when the bass weren't cooperating, but there were plenty of bream just waiting for someone to drop a popper near them. A decent 5 or 6 weight will save some days, and will probably come in handy when the schoolies start chasing shad in the backs of the creeks, too. Something heavier would work with bass bugs and for chasing Golden Bonefish in the spring. OK, now I've convinced myself. I need to pick up at least two combos and start catching more fish.

There is a technique to be learned for proper casts. The learning curve can be shortened if taught the proper way, or you could just go and sling the dern thing around.

Just going out and flinging can get ugly, so get lessons of some kind. I learned by watching video(no, it wasn't so long ago that it was a silent movie) and reading about proper technique, but some good live instruction would be better. Bass Pro Shops has a fly fishing department, and I have seen sign up sheets for classes there, so check with them. They will have you tying size 22 flies before you know it.

I can teach what I know for free, easily. I'll even provide the extra flyrod.

I used to work at a fly shop in college. It's not complicated at all. In my opinion the best tool to learn how to cast is one like that is linked below. You can make your own with a 3 foot dowel and 6 or so feet of yarn. It teaches you the rhythm of the "slowly accelerate and stop abruptly" that is necessary to create the "loop" which propels the line and therefore the fly. Of course you must adjust your stroke when going from the toy to a real rod but it helps you diagnose what you're doing wrong. Make your back cast and forward cast to be mirrors of each other. Watch your rod tip, it will dip a lot lower than you think it is if you're not looking. On both fore and back casts, speed up and then stop it as crisply as possible. I agree that 5 min with someone who knows what they are doing would be helpful. If I can help, let me know. Have fun.
