I wanted to know if there are some hiking trails that take you around the lake or with lake views? Is there a hiking trail to the smith mountain fire tower? I have some guest coming into town and they have requested we do some hiking around the lake. Any direction would be appreciated.

Cherokee Ridge on Overlook Road. There are several trails there overlooking the lake. Just be careful, some are steep and long. There is an information board at the top, be sure to read prior to leaving on the hike. From there you will be near Chimney Rock and can see the Kowaliga bridge over the long expanse of water. Great trails and beautiful, although probably a tad muddy right now. No cell phone service when you get down the hill either.

Thanks you. If the conditions are not right here, I think i may try Horseshoe Bend for is profound history in the area.

I haven't been to Horseshoe Bend in forever, but I do remember the trail being paved. That would be good right now. Wind Creek State Park has trails as well, but I haven't hiked them, so I don't know what shape they are in. Last time I was there, everyone in the group stuck to the roads, which is another option since the summer crowds should be mostly gone. I just discovered the Cherokee Ridge trails, and what I have seen of them leads me to believe that they will be messy right now.

also over on highway 63 at Russell Crossroads, there are the Russell trails. We have hiked short sections of them and they are nice. Some right along lake edge. Where we hiked was not steep but some areas may be. Also can rent horses to ride out there or rent a kayak or a bike. And then Catherine's Market is there and the Spring House, so it's a cool place to take guests.
I heard that the Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail Assoc also has some new trails on Smith Mountain that include the old fire tower there. We hope to get over there in the next couple weeks and check it out.
And ditto on the above comments on the Overlook trails. I have hiked them MANY times and are very beautiful and scenic. The one called Deadening Trail is a bit scary with the trail going along edge of steep bluff and lots of big boulders but for experienced hikers, it's a great time. :) Have fun.

Thanks so much for all the leads for now and the future hikes! Always something to discover on Lake Martin! : )
