This is enough to scare your pants off. If there was any doubt there was another shoe to drop with commercial real estate foreclosures ... take a look at this. These are number of units of each retailer that closed stores or folded in 2009.

I had to stop looking on page 2. This makes me feel sick. I think of all the lost jobs. That gives me a feeling of hopelessness. This is a "changing" world isn't it.

I'm not sure what all this means other then alot of stores have closed.
-We need some comparison numbers: for example, how many stores close each year? How many close in a regular recession year? How many Arby's (or whatever) close each year? Would Circuit City have closed anyway because of better and continually increasing Best Buy stores (I stopped buying at Circuit City years ago because their service stunk)? Some McD's closed, but how many more were opened?
-These numbers need context.
-Now the GM and Chrysler numbers are new and significant, and we all know the story behind them. Or.....maybe we don't. I'm still not clear on whether or not the alot of the Chrysler dealer closings were "politically" motivated. I read about that possibility. There was supposed to be some government investigation (fox and chichkens?). but I never heard much more.
-In any case, although these numbers are interesting, it's hard to make an assessment as to their true meaning without some context.

You have some valid points ... my understanding in reading some of this is this is the numbers are net net change (loss) of the retailers listed. These numbers are available each year. The reason I had them is we were putting something together for a client. So you can go on line and see that back just a few years ago there were net additions rather than losses.
This is not blaming it all on Obama and the dems ... but they need to take some ownership since their approach to the economy has had a very slow impact which resulted in more closings and more job losses.
I am sure that rather than the expansion of government and the other foolish things that the stimulus went to, a package that provided incentives to business through tax cuts, or tax cuts to individuals ... you would not see nearly the level of store closing, nearly the level of unemployment .... and as such, even government tax revenues would be higher since you would have more people working and more businesses operating.
But tax cuts are evil and don't work ... so instead we drive up unemployment, let businesses close, deflate asset values of homes and commercial real estate ... government revenues fall and it is blamed on bad policies from the past ... which by the way worked, and worked well.

It is interesting that Target, Walmart, Sams, Cosco, BJs, and Dollar General
do not appear on the list. I suspect many that have closed stores were too aggressive in opening new ones the past few years. There seemed to be a new Starbucks on every corner. Circuit City fired all their sales force few years ago and hired entry level people to save money. They deserved to go under as
they did meet meet their customers basic expectations.

It doesn't surprise me that a lot of stores have closed. As the big box discount retailers have upped the quality of their merchandise, it has affected other retailers. The downturn in the economy has just sped up the process. Some were going to go out of business.
Some deserve to go out of business too -- sloppy merchandising, lack of customer support, failure to anticipate what the customers want. Several stores that I shop are making last ditch efforts to "reinvent" themselves.
I also think there is a psychological component to it too --- many of us know we have too much stuff anyway, and when others are suffering, it just doesn't seem right to be acquiring more.
And I have to say that I take personal responsibility for the downturn of Starbucks. Since I moved to Lake Martin I no longer am able to make my twice a day stops there for a latte.

And if you order a peperoni pizza you'll get a pizza covered in green peppers....

Call it what you want. It is clear that you don't keep up with other lakes across the U.S. Numerous lakes have a speed limits of 35mph during the day and idle only at night. Fifteen to twenty five dollar launch fees.What iritates me is that we let this happen on a lake that covers 44,000 acers and over 700 miles of shore line. Have you ever been on logan martin lake on the coosa river,smaller and more congested than our lake this law would be more suited there than here. What really gets me about this law is nothing is mentioned of the real problem on this lake and others across this great country of ours JET SKIS! If you think legislation is not on the way about these nussiances you are a ---- but i won't go there. You all that are in favor of this boat ban start looking for your new quite,enviromently friendly,Slow,(remember the lightning storms) battery powered pontoon.Say it won't happen then research what i just wrote.

LOL!!
True story - I drink regular coffee black. So when I was traveling, I asked for coffee and the waiter said "latte"? and I said no. Well, it was latin coffee, strong as anything, and I was so wishing I had said yes to the "latte".

Not everyone likes Starbucks because some people think it tastes "burnt", but I think it has a cleaner taste.
When I was still working, getting a latte for the commute was the only thing that got me on the road some days.
