Several of my friends in Tennessee have been talking about river excursions they have taken on the Tennessee River and others. Some of these trips evidently last as long as a week and involve traveling in 2-4 boat groups in 18-20 foot runabouts. while I am not ready to commit to a week on the water I wonder if a day trip down the Alabama south of Montgomery would get me to Mobile or some other logical "take-out" point? Has anyone done a similar trip on the Alabama and if so how do I find information regarding water depth, fuel availibility, requirements regarding the passage through any river locks? I think the ideal time to do this would be in the fall about now given the general cooling of temperatures and possibly a reduction in boat traffic.

I have done a trip from Selma marina to Orange Beach/Gulf Shores several times. It is a fun trip as we left Friday morning at 7ish and got to Mobile that afternoon around 5 or so. That was driving 30-40mph and stopping several times throughout the day to swim, eat or gas up.
On Saturday morning we get up and go across the Mobile bay to Orange Beach and play in the bay and gulf for the rest of the day. We then had someone bring our trailer down and trailer the boats back home on Sunday.
It is a fun trip but there are things that have to be planned such as a Gas truck to fill everyone up just below Caliborne dam as there are no marinas in that area to get fuel.

Oh yeah, and once you get to Mobile, there is alot of shallow water......dont believe me?......just ask CAT as I had to call the Coast Guard to go get him out of the mud one year.

If Cat only had water in his ho'se hangout he could have floated that boat in the bay....

I've done it. It was really hot in the summer. Takes may coolers. But this time of year would be nice. BTW, I also had trouble sunning aground near the gulf. STAY IN THE CHANNEL
