Apologies if I missed this along the way, but I noticed that the sign in front of the Green Valley Market and Deli says "Going Out Of Business Sale."
Is it true? If so, what a loss to the area, especially for those who enjoy good food.

I also enjoyed going there on occasion, but my guess is they couldn't compete with the Red Hill Cottage (my favorite in the area). As for the higher end stuff, I'm sure Catherine's made it very difficult to survive.

I heard the same thing. I am sad, sad, sad.
I doubt it was from competition from Red Hill. From a consumer's perspective, I haven't seen any fall off in biz since Red Hill opened. If Red Hill was packed every day and Green Valley was empty, I would think differently. If anything I think the 2 would help each other draw traffic, like the eclipsing binaries of Oskar's / Niffers.
That place, in my mind, ranks tops with Oskar's in uniqueness of menu, consistency of service, and quality of food. What a downer.

I can't believe it! I loved their lunches and I prefer their filets over Catherines. What a shame. I saw how much work they put into getting it going, I know it must be a hard decision for her.

For some, Blue Creek is as good as "the middle of nowhere." It's all about what part of the lake you frequent. (I always laugh-- a sad laugh-- when I read restaurant posts that point out that a certain place is "very convenient" or "only a few minutes away." True, if everybody lived where you do; most don't.)
Back to the GVMD... I remember many years back, when a certain company in the area told people not to use a certain plumber; instead they were told to use a certain plumbing company. Those who rented from this company were threatened with eviction; those they couldn't evict were were just "strongly suggested" to quit calling that "banned" plumber. I wonder if Green Valley, much like that plumber, is seen as too much competition?

I read post about good thoughts and best wishes for restaurants and other business on and around the lake area! Many times threads wish new business luck and make comparisons to previous establishments that were in or close to the location. It appears that many of them fail. Some have suggested I have a location on or near the lake. I have NO road frontage or street traffic now. ZERO. So, what would I have to do to make sure a second location would survive? Would it be open only in spring and summer? What would I have to do different? Would I be anymore out of the way on the lake than I am now in Rural Prattvile? I know I would have more expense, and also MUCH more competition. This is a strong consideration of mine. Your honest thoughts are appreciated.

Stay where you are Steve and plan your trips to the lake wisely. I think what you are doing now is right. Do all your winterizing and summerizing in a couple of weekends to reduce travel costs and take the money to the bank. People with serious boat problems will come to you. That's my business plan for you and I'm sticking to it.

Depends on whether or not you have enough business in the season, which I suspect that you do. During the off season there is very little business, so not being located on or near the lake would do no good at that time. In season and in the months leading up to the season, I suspect that you have all you can handle.
I don't know how much land you have in at your current location, but I suspect that if you had the room to build some sort of covered storage, you could get customers to bring their boats for winterization, store them for 4-6 months and then they would be there for sumerizing. A pole leanto would work. Just don't know what you would have to pay for insurance under such circumstances.
I would bring my boat to you in at the end of October, have it serviced, stored, and then pick it up after sumerization in March.

I don't know much about your business but that sounds like reasonable advice. I don't have covered storage at my pier and always thought I could just call someone up and have them pick up the boat, store it for the winter and return it ready to go in the spring. Boy was I confused. Maybe there is not enough of that kind of demand???

Yea, stay where you are CAT. I had a shop on US 231 for a time and darn near went broke. Over head, taxes and permits will cause cost to go up and prices to go up. Folks in the woods or on the County Roads like we are will take that business. If the service is good then the one with best price wins. The high overhead will always loose to the low overhead if service and quality are equal at both locations.

Good info. I don't want to risk personal detail at ANY expense. Thanks for the post. Just thinking things through as Winter arives. Ya think Ben needs a GM? (kidding). The question is on my mind. Party is soon. It will be a good time to meet all.

I don't know if MB is Catherine's other personality, but he is definitely a longtime lake person if he remembers that. The plumber was James Meadows, he worked for Russell Lands but struck out on his own. He was a very good plumber and everybody liked him, so his business did well. Then Russell Lands sent a letter to their cabin rentals saying that using James as a plumber was grounds for eviction. This is not a rumor, I rented from Russell and remember getting the letter like it was yesterday, even though it was almost 40 years ago. I don't know about non-renters getting a letter but back then almost everyone who had a place on the lake had a Russell cabin. At the time the only Russell development was Willow Point; there were some APC cabins but not many, and hardly any at all on the side of the lake that James would have frequented.
The question was "Why does Russell Lands care who we use as a plumber?" Some thought that using non-RL plumbers would cost RL money but that doesn't fly, because renters didn't pay for services like that if they went through RL. Using James actually cost the renters more money, but most didn't mind, because James was good at his job, and did it better and quicker than his replacements. So the only real reason that Russell Lands would deny James work was pettiness.

I say, stay were you are for now. When or if the economy improves or at least get a little better come to the Lake. I believe that there is no real competition for you or your services here on the lake. Cost/value always is the determining factor for me and most others I know. The other boat service co. here on the Lake have fallen short to many times sooooo.... we need someone like you to come and help us. Hope this helps.

I agree with Mike, but I do think kizma and ric have good ideas, maybe for the future and we always have to think about the future...cat you have a good following here, keep up the good work and customer service and people will come to you, sometimes no matter how far they have to travel.
