Reference teh above article by Ralph Peters; We've taked about Peters before on this forum. Sometimes he has strange ideas. But this time, eventhough I don't agree with his every word, I do agree with the thrust of his article, ...what's more, I believe that most Americans will agree.
-His article makes two points: 1) why are we punishing patriots? and 2) It is not the American tradition to bring to the gallows members of the previous administration. (the investigation of these interrogators is but the first step leading to investigations of Cheney and Bush)
-1) Punishing Patriots: punishing agents for doing things that are not punishable, ...what's that about? Most of things that these interrogators are being investigatd for are things they "threatened" to do to the terrorists and thier families. The CIA people never did these things, nor intended to do them. All the techniques they used were ones passed on by the lawyers and their chain of command. Great deliberation was given along that chain as to whether these techniques were within either war time ethics or risk/benefits parameters of the crisis being faced at the moment. All these actions have been investiated before. To drag these people thru some kind of show trial for political theater is unconscionable. Those who conduct this witch hunt should be ashamed and those that support it should be ashamed. The results will be an intelligence force that will be ineffectual for many years to come.
2) Revenge against teh previous administrtion; Peters is right that this is not the American way. True, perhaps it could become the right thing to do sometime in the future should an administration commit heinous crimes against its people or the constitution, but that has never happened. The American tradition of a new administration moving on and looking to the future, rather than looking back and trying to punish a previous administration, started with Jefferson when he followed Adams. Jefferson's election was a repudiation of both the previous president and teh previoius party philosophy of federalized-centralized government. Jefferson had before him the opportunity to follow the examples of many European governments that arrested and prosecuted those previous leaders who had been overthrown one way or another. Jefferson considered that course of action but for a moment, but then he decided that was not going to be the American way. And from Jefferson's change of administration to the present, moving forward has been the American way. Now the present administration seems to want to change that tradition. So, is this kind of change that was promised promised?
