A family outing at Wind Creek State Park Saturday afternoon was marred by tragedy when a 13-year-old boy from Chicago drowned in the waters of Lake Martin.

The family was in the Lake Martin area visiting family, according to Alabama Marine Police officer Mark Fuller.

Several lake-goers watched on in dismay as local rescue personnel searched the lake bottom for the boy. It was more than an hour before the victim's body was discovered at 3:35 p.m. The identity of the boy was not going to be released until all of the family were notified.

Fuller said the boy was found by rescue divers about 125 feet from the water's edge in about 7 feet of water.

Rhonda Morris of Sylacauga was walking down to the beach area of the lake earlier that day when a woman ran to her and told her to call 911.

"She said there was a boy missing," Morris said. "There were two more in the water struggling ... she was in the water looking for them."

Four other children and their father were with the boy at the time of the incident and might have drowned as well were it not for the intervention of two concerned bystanders.

"My mom started screaming, saying a boy was going down and up," said Justin Allen. "I went in and got one and then gone back and got the next one."

After rescuing a young boy and girl, Allen said his father Tate dove into the water when he heard more people were drowning.

"I got a father and a boy," (Tate) Allen said. "The father was on the bottom of the lake."

Before the father and son team were aware of the final boy in the water, they were told to leave the scene by law enforcement and rescue officers.

"If it was up to me I'd still be out there," (Justin) Allen said during the search. "We tried."

Saturday's drowning was the first in Lake Martin this year.
