Sure, I have fired a .50 from a ground tripod, off the ring mount of an M-546 track vehicle, and as a spotter round from the 106 Recoiless. The wildest was firing a quad-50 off a Deuce and a half. It would actually rock the big old truck. We also had the single .50s mounted on dump trucks in our Engineer units.

They did not replace the simple little jeep with the HUMVEE until after I separated from Service.

I believe as the story goes: the Marines were the first to detach the .50 off the 106 Recoiless and used it as the first .50 sniper rifle.

Another funny but unlikely story goes: The North Vietmese captured one of our 106's and took it up North. They gathered a large group of digintaries behind the weapon and fired off a demonstration round. The recoil escape gasses or back blast wiped out the spectators. Thinking they had fired it from the wrong end, they moved the stand for a new group of spectators to the front end of the weapon. After the second demonstration firiing, they returned the weapon to the US.
