It all depends on budget and features. The new Lowrance side scan Elite 5X DSI fishfinder can be purchased on the web for around $550. The Elite 5 DSI with the fishfinder and chartplotter around $650. They have other models with more maps built in. If I were to spend the $550, I would spend the additional $100 for the plotter as it enhances the sale of the boat in the future as most like to mark their fishing holes.

If he wants a larger screen he will be into the HDS with screens of 7, 8, and 10inchs. They do get expensive but a nice size is the 8in screen.

It all depends on space and money. Keep in mind the Elite uses one transducer with side scan built in while the HDS uses 2 as they require a separate transducer for the side scan.
