SInce I have AT&T cell phones our service at the lake really stinks. We used to have a land line but used it so seldom that it wasn't worth the monthly cost. We do have Charter broadband service and therefore VOIP was an option. I learned about Ooma and decided to give it a try and I have to say I am impressed. The equipment cost is around $100 and can be used with any phone. And each month you pay around $3 for govt fees and that is it. Ordered it on Amazon. They provide you with a local number or can migrate an existing number to the service. Sound quality is great and it has built in voice mail that you can access on line, using an app on your smart phone and it sends you a text and email with the voice message attached right when it comes in.
The only downside is you need high speed internet and the phone will not work if it isn't working. Wasn't an issue for us as we already were paying for internet service. May be a low cost option for those at the lake.
