about the school shooting and the abysmal response of the Sherrif's department the more we should realize that we need to be responsible for our own self defense. I keep hearing all these complaints about how we are asking too much of teachers already and suggesting they be armed is a bridge too far. What gets lost in this discussion is that absent a weapon we are asking teachers to protect their students with door locks and hiding behind desks. Not exactly the optimal form of self defense in the case of an active shooter.
I would never advocate for forcing a teacher to be armed but I would certainly be all for giving them the training and certification if they chose to carry. Because as we saw in Florida, you cannot rely on law enforcement. They may not be able to get there in time and even if they were there, they may lack the courage or training to respond with force. We have to be prepared to defend ourselves. And we have to allow teachers that are so inclined to have the ability to defend their students, again with proper screening, training and certification.
