There is a simple test to determine when to correctly use “whether or not”. Replace it with the word “if” and see if it still means the same.

If I were to say “Island Camper asked whether or not the cat boat was sinking”. Substitue “if” === “Island Camper asked if the cat boat was sinking”. The meaning is the same so use “if”.

Jim loves you whether or not you agree with him. Now. try “if”== “Jim loves you if you agree with him”. It changes the meaning and “whether or not” is correct.
