In the pure sense of the word you are right, but I got the following from Wikipedia:

Quote:

Primarily limited to the United States, the term assault weapon is a political term, separate from the military definition, used to describe a variety of semi-automatic firearms that have certain features associated with military or police firearms, which are optimized for combat situations against human targets. The 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban, which expired on September 13, 2004, defined the rifle type of assault weapon as a semiautomatic firearm with the ability to accept a detachable magazine, and two or more of the following:

* Folding or telescoping stock
* Conspicuous pistol grip
* Bayonet mount
* Flash suppressor, or threaded barrel designed to accommodate one
* Grenade launcher
* Barrel shroud

end quote

I guess they key phrase is "optimized for combat situations against human targets". That descries my new weapon to a T. I don't hunt, and this particular rifle is not optimized for hunting. God help us if we ever get to the point that such weapons are required to protect life and limb.

I know several weapon freaks who own multiple weapons and hoard thousands of rounds of ammunition, but I am not one. My home is not an arsenal, but it is equipped for defense. Maybe the AR-15 would be better described as an estate defense weapon - to be used only in extreme situations. Should the perimeter defense fail and the suckers get into the house the AR is going to be ditched and the Glock will be the defense weapon of choice.

A person needs to learn to use the weapon, be comfortable with it, and fire it on occasion to ensure it will work if ever needed. In fact, in my opinion every adult in the house needs to know how to use the chosen defense weapon(s).

As to the light-speed travel down the road to Socialism, I am truly frightened. What if those three senators are, in fact, closet liberals? Really frightening thought.

Peace
