I realize that the most effective way to reduce the threat is to do so at its source, but these guys have had essentially free access - with impunity - to anything going through those shipping channels. I believe it is time for the international community to make those waters less safe for the pirates. Nations should place a few well-armed self defense forces on each of the vessels and their navies should be more active with patrols that are willing to shoot and thus make the waters less safe for the pirates. It is time to play hard ball and reduce the threat - by force, which is the only thing they understand.

Don't agree with land intervention. It is hard enough telling pirates from hapless fishermen - could you imagine that same scenario on land? Even in Iraq we had a little idea of who the enemy was - but Somalia would be more like Viet Nam.
