When did tournament fishermen start keeping fish home ? I was told that in the tournament this week, fish were taken home.

Not to sound stupid, but why would you not take your fish home? I know about "Catch and release", to keep population of fish good. And, I have heard of points/pounds being taken away for dead fish at weighin, But is there a lack of fish an issue now? Are some tourneys different than others? Just a question. Maybe some fisherman can answer this question. If CAT goes fishin' all day, he's gonna eat them fish that is for sure.

Do you know who sponsored the tournament? There was a bass tournment on the lake around February 13 and they show another for March 6. What group are you referring to last weekend? I can't omagine a bass tourney allowing participants to keep their catch. Maybe, it was a catfish tourney.

Let me know so I can find out. Thanks.

Sounds like a private club tourny.I wouldn't think a few for the frying pan would be very unusual.

Some private clubs allow the keeping of fish especially from a clean lake like Martin. Your larger organizations release back into the lake at weighin.

All tournaments including billfish, sharks, and bass should be catch and release. One can fish on their own and keep their catch. The good publicity from catch and release fars outweighs the need to keep tourney fish.

If bass pros begin to keep their catch, the residents on the impoundment will tell them to take their tourney someplace else. What they say to those locals who also fish for pleasure on the same lake is that we are going to BORROW your lake for a tourney and will leave it as we found it. Everybody is happy with that arrangement.

I agree. This lake used to be a very good crappie lake also, until people caught over 100 regardless of size and took them out of the lake.

when a large tournament (50+ boats) catches a limit of 5 fish per boat, that is a significant number of fish, 250+, not to return to the population. if you have two anglers per boat as some tournaments allow, double that to 500+ fish.

its all about responsible stewardship; conservation of the resource; and preservation of the sport for future generations.

regards, and good luck to all, alabamaangler
