After the nomination is set you'll see that indeed the economy will be Subject Number One. Don't get sidetracked by the intraparty squabbling. What you term "social engineering" will long be forgotten, except maybe with the exception of the Feds trying to tell religioius organizations what they can and can't do.

I do. Check out the cherry trees. I understand they are in bloom. Maybe you are right, but right now all I'm hearing is contraceptives and social issues. Rick Santorum is worried about making Pueto Ricans speak English. I guess Romney is talking about gas prices. He wants to do away with "energy officials"... not sure how that will change gas prices... but the fact that he says that leads me to conclude that he doesn't know the full extent of what the Department of Energy is engaged in. I have a feeling it is going to be a long election cycle.

Maybe that is the problem ... the DOE is engaged in too much.

I know you know these things better than I ... but the DOE was created with just a few people department with a specific mission related to our dependence on foreign oil ... now look at the size and it was not due to the great accomplishments or fulfilling their mission. Such great use of tax payer dollars. Especially under Oblamer.

President Barack Obama unveiled on May 7 a $26.4 billion budget request for DOE for fiscal year (FY) 2010, including $2.3 billion for the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). The budget aims to substantially expand the use of renewable energy sources while improving energy transmission infrastructure. It also makes significant investments in hybrids and plug-in hybrids, in smart grid technologies, and in scientific research and innovation.^[6]

As part of the $789 billion economic stimulus package in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, Congress provided Energy with an additional $38.3 billion for fiscal years 2009 and 2010, adding about 75 percent to Energy's annual budgets. Most of the stimulus spending was in the form of grants and contracts.

History has been rewritten to facilitate a secular Constitution and society. That is not what the founders intended. Did you know the first schoolbook produced was the New England Primer and it had bible verses throughout? Our march toward a secular society is producing some bizarre effects like what you mentioned.

I think that there have been at least 17 developed societies in history that have taken this path and all have ended up in the dump heap. Where there is no sense of absolute right and wrong the country degerates pretty quickly.

They are gorgeous and so worth seeing, even if you have to see them with a million tourists including a couple hundred Japanese with cameras. I think Spring is probably the best time of year in DC.

I read the NYTimes every day and I haven't noticed any anti-Catholic ads. I'm not sure why anyone would be running "anti" anything ads. And I can't see any reason to be running "anti-Muslim" ads either. Just watched a show on National Geo last night about the Jews in Auschwitz. It could happen again, you know. We don't need to alienate groups based on religion or on country of birth.

The absolute sense of right and wrong doesn't have to be Bible based. The Founding Fathers envisioned a country with a separation of church and state. I'm not sure that they had a strong "religious" sense of right and wrong either -- you recall that many of them were adulterers. The fact is that Thomas Jefferson was re-writing the Bible, leaving out the things that he didn't agree with. Did you know that up until I was in the 2nd grade, we had a Bible reading every morning, right before we said the Pledge of Allegiance and sang "God Bless America"? Yet, we had Jewish kids in our class and there were probably kids in the class whose parents were atheists. I prefer to leave the church out of our state, and let people worship outside of government as they see fit. Because I'm sure there is some group out there that would just love to see a "national" Christian based religion implemented and made mandatory. And as an aside, from a lapsed Catholic, it is my personal opinion that the Catholic church will do anything it can to keep the issue of anti-contraception under discussion. It's a sore point with them, always has been, always will be. Enough social engineering. The politicians need to return to the secular issues confronting our country, and leave religion and social issues alone. And

That's all well and good but the problem is the education system has abandoned absolute truths for moral relativism. These kids are taught that people define their own "system" of right and wrong. Now today's crop of mommies instead of being a source of security for right and wrong are giving their children choices instead of instruction and correction. They focus on creating self esteem instead of teaching their kids self control. This moral relativsm was more known as humanism years ago and now we are seeing the product of this experiment with our kids. Immature minds don't need to be contemplating shades of grey..only black and white. This secular philosophy has become a religion unto itself and is becoming oppressive through all these inconsistencies and political correctness.

While I would like to split hairs with you and say it is no more Mommies that aren't teaching values, but Daddies are also in there too.

I agree that there is too much emphasis on self esteem and not enough on values. From where I sit, it appears to me that most parents these days are too exhausted and self absorbed to teach their kids much of anything, other than "everyone who show up gets a prize" and that your own feelings are much more important than anyone elses. Rules exist only as a guideline for what you might do if it suits your purposes. There isn't any sense of being truly sorry, but only sorry one has gotten caught. No manners, no civility. Values are a quaint notion. Respect for other people is also a quaint notion. People in public life, who used to either be a lesson to us, or someone that we could look up to, have revealed themselves to be no better than most, and in most cases, worst than most. Not just politicians, but sports figures, entertainers, etc.

This is a topic I could go on and on about. We have ourselves to blame. It was our generation that decided to reject parenting wisdom of another generation. We decided that we didn't like that rules. We were really stupid.
