Orders for U.S. durable goods increased more than forecast in April, indicating the world’s largest economy will get a lift in the second half of the year as business investment strengthens AND……….the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits fell 23,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 340,000, a level consistent with solid job growth.

That's a positive jobs picture? My, how far we have fallen with the affirmative action president. GF, if I spent my time posting the bad economic news I'd have to quit my job. I'm glad after weeks of relentlessly bad economic news you've found a nugget to post about. And this after 4 years into this so called recovery. But I actually am more optimistic than ever. Now that SOTUS is embroiled in six or seven scandals Americans will realize he is the lamest of lame ducks and the country will finally have a chance to recover. Drive by again GF in the next few weeks when another positive piece of news trickles in.

GF,

Please give me the recipe for what you have been imbibing, for it must numb your sense of clarity with numbers.  Please keep in mind, that the orders for durable goods, (those expected to last 3 years or more) also (and I did not know this) ncludes aircraft orders which are extremely volatile.  Boeing from what I read, had 51 orders for aircraft, up from 39 in march.  Actual shipments of capital goods fell 1.5%. Economists expect the GDP to grow at 1.5% in the second quarter, (this from Reuters), down 1% from the first quarter. Shipments of defense related capital goods fell 5.6% in April.  Housing prices are starting to increase in my area, an encouraging sign, but I challenge you to state that this administration has created an optimal business environment that would allow small business to robustly achieve and create jobs which is what THEY, and not the government, are supposed to do.  Liberal economics just doesn't work.....

Continue to be a naysayer but today's news is even better:

Consumer confidence climbed to the highest level in more than five years and home pricesadvanced by the most in seven as the housing rebound gives the U.S. economy a lift.

AND the Dow Jones average is up 200 points.

As I told you GF, it is not surprising as Americans see SOTUS embroiled in scandals (including desperately latching onto a RINO to boost his creds and to try to change the subject) they should indeed be more confident as he quacks loudly like the lame duck he is.  We are closer than ever to being rid of this pestilence so it does not surprise me there is growing optimism.

But regardless of the reasons, you seem to be proud that four plus years into a so-called recovery we have a few good pieces of positive economic news.  Why do you have such low expectations for our current president?  I just thought it was Archie that felt that way but apparently you do as well.  Why is that GF?  What are you hiding?  Did you too grow up in North Georgia or some redneck area in the north?

As for me, I hold him to the exact same standard, and according to that standard he has been an abject, miserable failure on both domestic economic issues and international policies.

I was in my neighborhood restaurant this morning and was seated behind a group of jubilant individuals celebrating the coming implementation of the health care bill. I could not finish my breakfast. This is what ensued:
They were a diverse group of several races and both sexes. I heard a young man exclaim, “Isn’t Obama like Jesus Christ? I mean, after all, he is healing the sick.”
A young woman enthusiastically proclaimed, “Yeah, and he does it for free. I cannot believe anyone would think that a free market wouldn't work for health care.”
Another said, "The stupid Republicans want us all to starve to death so they can inherit all of the power. Obama should be made a Saint for what he did for those of us less fortunate.”
At this, I had more than enough. I arose from my seat, mustering all the restraint I could find, and approached their table. “Please excuse me; may I impose upon you for one moment?”
They smiled and welcomed me to the conversation. I stood at the end of their table, smiled as best I could and began an experiment.  “I would like to give one of you my house. It will cost you no money and I will pay all of the expenses and taxes for as long as you live there. Anyone interested?”
They looked at each other in astonishment. “Why would you do something like that?” asked a young man, “There isn’t anything for free in this world.”  They began to laugh at me, as they did not realize this man had just made my point.
“I am serious, I will give you my house for free, no money whatsoever. Anyone interested?”  In unison, a resounding “Yeah” fills the room.  “Since there are too many of you, I will have to make a choice as to who receives this money-free bargain.”
I noticed an elderly couple was paying attention to the spectacle unfolding before their eyes, the old man shaking his head in apparent disgust.
“I tell you what; I will give it to the one of you most willing to obey my rules.”  Again, they looked at one another, an expression of bewilderment on their faces.  The perky young woman asked, “What are the rules?”  I smiled and said, “I don’t know. I have not yet defined them. However, it is a free home that I offer you.”  They giggled amongst themselves, the youngest of which said, “What an old coot. He must be crazy to give away his home. Go take your meds, old man.”  I smiled and leaned into the table a bit further. “I am serious, this is a legitimate offer.”
They gaped at me for a moment.  “I’ll take it you old fool. Where are the keys?” boasted the youngest among them.  “Then I presume you accept ALL of my terms then?” I asked.
The elderly couple seemed amused and entertained as they watched from the privacy of their table. “Oh yeah! Where do I sign up?”
I took a napkin and wrote, “I give this man my home, without the burden of financial obligation, so long as he accepts and abides by the terms that I shall set forth upon consummation of this transaction.”  I signed it and handed it to the young man who eagerly scratched out his signature.  “Where are the keys to my new house?” he asked in a mocking tone of voice.
All eyes were upon us as I stepped back from the table, pulling the keys from pocket and dangling them before the excited new homeowner.  “Now that we have entered into this binding contract, witnessed by all of your friends, I have decided upon the conditions you are obligated to adhere to from this point forward. You may only live in the house for one hour a day. You will not use anything inside of the home. You will obey me without question or resistance. I expect complete loyalty and admiration for this gift I bestow upon you. You will accept my commands and wishes with enthusiasm, no matter the nature. Your morals and principles shall be as mine. You will vote as I do, think as I do and do it with blind faith. These are my terms. Here are your keys.”
I reached the keys forward and the young man looked at me dumbfounded.  “Are you out of your mind? Who would ever agree to those ridiculous terms?” the young man appeared irritated.  “You did when you signed this contract before reading it, understanding it and with the full knowledge that I would provide my conditions only after you committed to the agreement.”
The elderly man chuckled as his wife tried to restrain him. I was looking at a now silenced and bewildered group of people.
You can shove that stupid deal up your a** old man. I want no part of it!” exclaimed the now infuriated young man.  'You have committed to the contract, as witnessed by all of your friends. You cannot get out of the deal unless I agree to it. I do not intend to let you free now that I have you ensnared. I am the power you agreed to. I am the one you blindly and without thought chose to enslave yourself to. In short, I am your Master.”
At this, the table of celebrating individuals became a unified group against the unfairness of the deal.  After a few moments of unrepeatable comments and slurs, I revealed my true intent.   “What I did to you is what this administration and congress did to you with the health care legislation. I easily suckered you in and then revealed the real cost of the bargain. Your folly was in the belief that you can have something you did not earn, and for that which you did not earn, you willingly allowed someone else to think for you. Your failure to research, study and inform yourself permitted reason to escape you. You have entered into a trap from which you cannot flee. Your only chance of freedom is if your new Master gives it to you. A freedom that is given can also be taken away. Therefore, it is not freedom at all.”  With that, I tore up the napkin and placed it before the astonished young man. “This is the nature of your new health care legislation.”   I turned away to leave these few in thought and contemplation -- and was surprised by applause.
The elderly gentleman, who was clearly entertained, shook my hand enthusiastically and said, “Thank you, Sir. These kids don’t understand Liberty .”  He refused to allow me to pay my bill as he said, “You earned this one. It is an honor to pick up the tab.”
I shook his hand in thanks, leaving the restaurant somewhat humbled and sensing a glimmer of hope for my beloved country.

If the economy is improving it is in spite of SOTUS and not because of him.  That's why after almost four and a half years of miserable results he is so happy to report the smattering of good economic news whilst he blindly ignores all the bad news.  I particularly like his constant crowing about the stock market.  Wonder how the lower middle class and poor are feeling about that?  I know the spread between the poor and wealthy is up significantly under SOTUS which is why he is supported by the likes of Buffett and others......they know who really butters their bread and it isn't the GOP.

With regard to the housing recovery I do think SOTUS deserves partial credit.  He has overseen such a lousy, horrendous economy over the last four plus years that no one in their right mind would speculate on new housing developments and home prices had fallen so far under his watch that many current homeowners cannot afford to sell as they are underwater thereby decreasing inventory significantly.  Even with consistent demand, limited inventory will result in a firming up of prices which is finally taking hold.  And given the pathetic results over the last several years even a modest dollar increase in value represents a much higher percentage increase in home values which is why they want to focus on percentages and ignore totally the devastation to American's wealth index under this president.

But GF doesn't know much if anything about economics so I don't expect him to be able to connect the dots and see that the current housing trend is a further indictment of his messiah.

You see, he truly thinks left wing nut big government types like SOTUS are benevolent because they are all for abortion on demand, gay marriage, gay rights, gay expression, gay carnal relations with same sex animals and hatred of people who love America, believe in limited government, a strong national defense and traditional values. But he will find out what Bonhoeffer learned prior to WW2 when there was no one to stand up for him.

You see GF, this is exactly what we on this board have been trying to teach you about reading and believing simple headlines.  Look deeper, ask questions, stuff that the media should be doing but doesn't.  Regarding the housing market, MM is correct.  It is moving ever so slowly in the better direction, but not for the reasons you suspect.  Hedge funds and investors have been gobbling up single family residences for cash and then renting them, housing building permit bapplications have decreased over the last 2 months, all contributing to the lack of supply.  Rates are good, as set by the Fed Reserve and the demand is simply outweighing the supply.  Now when building permits begin to be issued at pre- recession rates, I will begin to feel better.  This housing bubble is still somewhat artificial, so be careful.  Stock market increases are solely the result of more money being printed in my opinion.  Again, be careful, this bubble will have to correct itself and in doing so, alot of middle class investors will lose out on taking profit.  This economy is still mired in mediocrity, and the sad fact is that it did not have to be this way.....Bottom line GF, read a headline and ask questions as all is not as it seems.
