I believe you are right. We have lost our moral compass… and, I agree that we began losing it in the 60s.
We have lost our ability to clearly discern what is right and wrong. We engage in situational ethics and rationalize immoral behavior.
AN EXAMPLE:
On the one hand we have television programs such as Desperate Housewives, NCIS, CSI, Sex in the City, Seinfeld, and Will and Grace, that regularly feature(d) violence against women, homosexuality, “hooking up”, and all manner of perversions. (Some of you who are reading this will chuckle at my stuffiness.) On the other hand telemedia people will tell you it is all fiction and people know better. Maybe we do know better. But, we have become desensitized to it.
Yet, we find increasing numbers of people, especially young people who practice the behaviors they see on television. An OB/GYN PA whom I know has pointedly stated that more than a quarter of population of the US is positive for Herpes Simplex 2 (HSV2). Most don’t know they have it. This is a direct result of promiscuity and an indirect result of desensitization with respect to immorality.
If it is all fiction and people know better. Then why do they advertise on television? Is suspension of disbelief turned on and off? Consciously? Subconsciously? And what is being advertised?

Our morality seems to be moving farther away from our own faces. It certainly appears to have vacated our collective minds. This is our light as seen by the rest of the world.
And from a distance… an ever increasing distance… as we move away… God is watching us.
