Excellent! In the 70's, I worked in a plant where an all salaried work force concept was used. The intent was to pay for performance (quality, safety, productivity, etc.). Two employees might be doing the same job but one might be making several dollars a month higher pay.

When it was time to consider candidates for promotion to higher paying jobs in maintenance, control panels, etc., several criteria were used - service time, safety record, absenteeism, education, skills, attitude, etc. Candidates were selected by a panel from manufacturing, peers, HR. This method helped to insure that the higher caliber employees competed for the top jobs and pay.

This concept worked very good. Employee's who wanted to do the minimum acceptable did not receive the same compensation as those who wanted to excel.
