An insurance claim? I've never heard of it being done but it would be worth a call. I'll bet your yard is a mess too.

The advice to turn your water off is a good one. All kinds of bad things can happen...water heater starts leaking, dishwasher cutoff valve fails, and of course power goes off and frozen pipes.

I had a valve installed in a conveinent place near the house. When you leave, turn it off, throw the breaker on the water heater and turn off any icemakers.

One word of caution when you come back is be sure to turn the water on and then turn on a hot water faucet, letting any air out, to make sure you don't have a water heater partially drained or you might burn out your elements. Water heaters have to have water in them or the elements will burn out pronto!
