Most of the commercial boats have closed system cooling and the heat exchanger usually is mounted on the bottom of the hull where it is in direct contact with the water. May not be true of planning hulls, but most vessels you see in photos are rig service boats and shrimp boats.

Don't take your I/O out in that syrup.
