I believe that when ever a charity is trying to raise money and is relying on the good will of the community and the desire of certain members of that community to support the efforts of other members, especially children, then it should be incumbent on the fund raising organization to stipulate how much of every dollar spent on an item actually goes to the charity.

For instance, if a roll of cookie dough cost ten dollars and the school gets two dollars of that ten, the sales pitch should include that information.

And you should be given the option of making a charitable contribution instead of buying the cookies.  Then I could give 100 dollars to the school,  take the 30 dollars I save on taxes and buy twice as much cookie dough while the school gets their take increased 500%.

My father was always against anyone having his children huckster for such causes.  When I or my sibs were called upon to do so,  he would go to the organization and write them a check for the amount of the number of items we were to sell.  He would tell the organization that he did not want the items,  they should not purchase them for him, and they should use the money they saved for the organization.

I think my dad did the right thing,  because at the end of the day the items either made you fatter or ended up in a landfill.
